Envoy Front-End Conversion

Hi all,

I'm looking for more up-to-date advice on the Envoy front-end swap for my '98 S-10. I already have the front bumper and HID assemblies, just need a grille I believe. I know there's a thread in the how-to section but it's from almost 20 years ago and although the truck itself mechanically hasn't changed in 20 years the thread's pictures have been lost.

I know it should be mostly bolt-on but I've read a couple threads indicating I may need to make some changes to my wiring harness for the HID light setup? The guy I bought the parts from had them on a Sonoma, not a S10, but he said everything should be plug and play.

Does anyone have any guidance on this or what exactly I'll need to change with my S-10's wiring (if anything) or other parts I need for this? I was having difficulty clarifying in previous threads and didn't want to dig them up from the grave.

This may be better suited in the lighting/electrical forum but any advice is appreciated.

P.S. I'm keeping up with my 327 SBC thread as well, I haven't forgotten and appreciate all the comments!

The harness for the lights used a relay to operate the lights. This was for the stock ignitors. The ignitors for the bulbs are all one unit on these lights and chances are the ignitors don't work any more. Even if they do work those ignitors are huge and mount down low on the radiator support. You can find the wiring info on the schematics for a Blazer with the Envoy package.

Thanks so much for sharing! The guy showed me pictures of all of them working on his Sonoma (how recently I'm not sure) but I will look up the information. Really appreciate your response.
Hi again, sorry to bump/double-post my own thread. Does anyone know where the ballast mounting brackets are supposed to mount to on the radiator core support? I'm having trouble determining the OEM location where they should have been.
For anyone deciding to do this, I ended up just removing the transformer support brackets and double-side tape/zip tying the ballasts to the inner side of the bumper fascia. The brackets do not seem to have a comfortable/easy place to mount that I could find after several days of research. All they need is a place they can stay dry and get some air-flow, so I'm not too worried about it.

Photo reference, the black bracket is the one I removed.

Yesterday I wrapped up the conversion and wanted to show off the finished product. I understand we probably need to do a bit of lining up, but thought I'd share.

when I swapped my front to the Envoy I almost put the ballast system in but chose to use LED headlights instead.

Looks clean! The LEDs look really nice, had I not got them in a package with the bumper I might have just went with the stock LEDs.

The ballast brackets mount on the core support behind the bumper. They hang below the core support if I remember correctly. It's a bit of an awkward place to get to.

What a total pain in the butt. I appreciate you sharing that information. I ended up just removing those core support mounting brackets and mounting the ballasts with their support bracket to the inside of the bumper cover using some 3M double-sided tape squares from "HID Kit Pros". It's held for several days, we'll see how it does under the duress of being on the road. I figured as long as they stay dry and get some air flow, who cares?
