ok heres the story. ive noticed for the last few day a vibration under my truck and tried to figure it out at school (UTI) for 3 days. tried a few things but couldnt solve the problem.
wednesday night i was driving home from work at 9 on the 10 freeway and my truck started vibrating really really violently like hitting small speed bumps at 80 mph. then the cv joint at the diff. broke and the shaft was flopping around and sliced 2 holes in my gas tank broke the hoses ant cut the bottom of my bed. a second later the cv joint in the middle broke and the shafe shot out the back. good thing noboday was behind me or beside me. it jolted my truck around till it shot out. the gas gushed out all over the freeway and when the shaft let go it sparked all over and the gas caught fire on the freeway but went out in like 2 seconds but it scared me. i pulled over and let the rest of the gas pour out then pushed it away from the gas and oil.
had it towed home that night then to the shop the next day. i went and checked it out today. the shop got a gas tank for 250 a driveshaft for 350 and some hoses and brackets broken for lik 50. but it bent my pinion :( i just had a torsen and 373s put in and it cost 300 for labor so now i gotta buy the ring and pinion again for 220 and pay the 300 again for the install. i also just had it lowered without pinion shims so i got those to be put on and i think that had something to do with it. anyways ill keep it updated on the final cost and how it comes out.

i think im gonna have them install a driveshaft loop to be safe in case it happens again. from what i here now is that a lot of s10s do this. its not very uncommon at all. i talked to a driveline specialist and he said they always break in the same spot due to a poor design by gm.

i hope there isnt a next time. but i dont wanna fork out all this money again if i can prevent most of it with a 50 dallar loop or whatever

What are you taking at UTI? Maybe you could fab a cheesy loop for your driveshaft

Damn dude that has to suck. Thats a load of parts you have to buy, hope it all works out.

Zee87- im taking the automotive classes. ive only done 5 of 17 but i probably will make one when i get to the powertrains class.

ok guys heres the latest. i got the ring and pinion again but ordered the ones for 2 series carrier :( ill have hte right ones tomorrow. also the 350 dollar used driveshaft was taken to a driveline shop and the joints ant center bearing are all bad so for another 500 buck its gonna be all rebuilt with new everything except the tubes, even painted. so thats another 500 to add on. im working at autozone right now so im gonna do a damaged swap and get new ones for free :) ill keep updating.

i doubt my insurance would pay for all the stuff ive done to it :(

That's a hell of a lot of money for a driveshaft. You should be able to get a custom one built for that, not a rebuilt junk yard one.

Damn dude, the shop is totally ripping you off for all those parts! I bought a whole used rear assembly for 200 bux right out of the junkyard and youre paying 800 for the driveshaft?! sheesh..

i have a gas tank here too but its metal and yours is plastic..otherwise i would have sold it to you for 50 bux..

my gas tank is metal. and the guy told me today that he called where he got the driveshaft and told them is screwed up so he took the price to 150 so now its 150+500. from chevy a new one is 1300 and the gut can get it for cost at 900 so its still cheaper. also a driveline shop cannot make a cutom shaft because its lowered and because of the sucky design of the driveline with the ext cab.

ok here we go. i went to pick up my truck yesterday and it was almost finished so i helped the guy out who was doing it for a couple hours and we finished. lowered my truck down and i put it in gear and went to take off. felt like the e brake was on but it wasnt. foward reverse both wouldnt go. we jacked up the back then did it off the ground. the wheels move real slowly and really jerky and these aweful noises were coming from the tranny. bad clanking grinding banging noises. so they said my planetary gears could have screwed up when the driveshaft broke :( i left and they will check it out more monday. this really suck cause i already paid them 1600 and its not fixed yet :(

My driveshaft ripped apart on my 97 V8. My step brother and I were going about 147 when it happened too. Not kewl by any means. One piece came out the left side, and the other piece came out the right side, and both went off the road about 40 feet. It took forever to find the 2 pieces. It ripped a hole in my tank too. The drive shaft shop that made the driveshaft wouldnt stand behind it, and said an S10 shouldnt be able to go that fast. I took it to another shop and they made a whole new one, new ends and tube for 175 and some change I think. DO NOT spend that much for a driveshaft. Measure center to center where your U-joints would be, and give them those measurements, and a local shop should be able to make you one for pretty close to the same price. :thumbup: :headbang:

Your getting riped on the driveline. I had to have a driveline made for my stang after the trani swap and I didn't pay but 100 for the works, (j/y driveline lenghtend, balanced, joints) and I told the shop that I hammer on the car so they built it to handel
