My manual says that my cooling system capacity is
13.5qts. When I drain it via the radiator plug I
only get about 4qts. I tried filling it up and running
the engine for 10 minutes after the thermostat opened
and still got only 4qts after draining. Any ideas?
My car is 1989 S10 4x4 4.3L

I thought it would flow from the block back into radiator.
Thanks. I'll try that tonight.

Didn't help. I pulled the lower hose from the block and nothing came out. I need to locate coolant drain plugs on the block. Anybody know where they are located?

on the driverside of the block should be a small bolt lookin thing just above the exhaust manifold with 2 wires connected to it, unscrew it and that should drain some out

Block drains

About 2/3 rds of the way abck the side of the block, under the exhaust manifold, there is a 1/4" NPT. plug on each side. TBI trucks have the knock sensor screwed into the starter side. These are the block drains, not easy to get to...

I give up. I think I found the drain plugs. These are 14mm bolts.
On the left side it's right above the oil lines going to remote oil filter. On the right side it's right next
to the starter. I tried opening the one on the right
side, because I figured starter is easier to deal
with then the oil lines. After 4 evenings under the
car I ended up half stripping the bolt head (which
I hope is a drain plug). I'll just fill up the
system with water, then drain the radiator. And then fill the radiator up with pure antifreeze.
Given the total capacity of 13.5 quarts, out of
which about 4 qts is radiator. I should get close
to 50/50 mixture. This doesn't make me feel any
better though. :evilg:
