Do I need o2 sensors

I have a 97 S10 4.3. I don’t have a catalytic converter. The o2 sensor is kind of in my way is there any good reason not to cut out this section of exhaust and weld pipe in? The exhaust flange is bad and the bolts are broke this would be my easiest fix.
