Easiest fix is to use the correct year cluster. In 98 it's even more interesting because of the long UAW strike. Gm had a lot of back orders when the strike ended and built 98's way past the changeover date by using 99 parts. You need to look at the SPID sticker in your glove box to see if it's a ZN4 1998 EXTENDED BUILD. What that means is if it does not have a ZN4 you need a 98 cluster. If it's a zn4 you need a 98 that's also a ZN4 or a 99 cluster. Gm used 99 parts to fill all the back orders for 98's.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'll just find an aftermarket tach. Later I'll be doing a ls swap. I'll probably have to figure it out again.
