I have recently bought a 97 rcsb s10 that has a 5.3 lm7 and a nv3500 installed. The person who done the swap done a bad job to say the least. When they done the swap they deleted all four of the o2 sensors and the knock sensors. I have not been able to hook up to the OBD2 port yet cause they didn't even wire it in. My first question is how is it running even half way decent without the front 2 o2 sensors and is it a bad idea to delete the knock sensors

I remember when I first contemplated an LS swap and how cheap I could do it. Thankfully I listened to some of the regular contributors to this forum and decided to do it right. It is probably costing about a third more but time is money and I will end up with a reliable professional looking swap. Not saying you shouldn't save money when you can but not at the expense of performance or reliability.

I was told that it was tuned with hp tuners. My question is can it be tuned with anything else at this point or do I have to use hp tuners. Or can I use something else what is the cheapest running device I can get.

HPTuners is about the least expensive unless you want to try the new experimental free LS Droid. As the name implies you can tune with your nota iphone.
Don't know enough about it to tell you if it'll rewrite HPT files or not. What I have read about it gives me the impression it helps if you're a nerd. (Not intended as a criticism, wish I new that techy stuff).
Just Google "LS Droid" for more info

As long as they did use one of HPT's custom operating systems, any of the tuning software will read and write it. As far as running without front O2's your vehicle does it every time it starts, until they warm up. If they never get active, the OS just runs in open loop.

At start-up, it's definitely running open-loop regardless of whether it has a stock ECU or HPTune or whatever. Without the O2 sensors it'll run all day in open loop and just throw codes for them. Now, if it goes into reduced power mode, then you've either got a throttle-body control issue or the knock sensor(s) is/are bad.
