My truck (97 4wd blazer) leaks pretty bad once the engine reaches operating temperature. It is not leaking from: hoses, water pump, intake manifold. It leaks from the engine block somewhere. What can it be? What are freeze plugs? How bad of a job am i looking at?

Thanks

freeze plugs are supposed to get "pushed out" of the block in the event that ice starts forming in the cooling system, to prevent a cracked block from ice expansion. but many blocks crack anyway, so their effectivness at this is questionable.

the holes for them also serve to help remove sand from the core after the casting process.

if one of side plugs are leaking, you might be able to replace it without too much hassle. if it is one of the rear plugs, the tranny and flywheel will have to be removed to replace it....

a leaking head gasket is another possibllity.

Maybe check your thermostat housing? Might be a bad gasket/seal there that is causing it to leak once the thermostat opens.
