I am in the process of replacing my Cat, but the thing wont come off. Its got the three bolts in a triangle at the end (got those off) and then there is a clamp at the front of the cat (got it off as well). But my problem is this.....The part with the clamp, the cat is slid over the pipe coming from the exhaust manifolds, but I cant get it to slide off of it. I've tried hitting it with a hammer and prying it but nothing is working. Anybody know of a good way to get the thing off here....Anything will be helpful, thanks.

Heat it up a little then try hitting it with a hammer.

I dont have a torch or anything, so would running the truck for a second work?

Your next option is to cut it off and clamp a new piece of pipe on.

Dont have a saw sall, plus i cant cut anything off of there or else the cant wont go back on...any other suggestions.

I dont have any extra pipe lying around either, this sucks. I dont know how else to get it off.

Check for a weld where they meet. That could be your problem.

mcgruff has it right. Take a mirror and look on top of the pipe
where the cat meets the merge pipe. GM being the General
pulled a trick on us and put a small spot weld right on top.
You can't hardley see it, a mirror will help a lot. Once you find
it grind it off with a grinder of a Dremel tool. If ya don't
have these, you can try a file, but it'll be aPITA..Took me
close to three hrs fighting the stinking old cat trying to get
it off before I found this small weld.

It isn't much, but if I hadn't found it, I'd most likely still be out
there trying to get the :censor: factory cat off !

I didnt see a weld when I looked. I used a mirror and stuff but still didnt see one. What are you talking about where the cat meets the merge pipe?

I'm talking about where the clamp was. The spot weld is tiny.
You may have to run your hand around that area. You also
have to soak that area where the cat's inlet slides onto the
merge pipe. When I say merge I'm talking about the y-pipe
where the left and righ bank pipes meet and are welded into
that one pipe that holds the o2 sensor..You may not have the
weld but most everyone I've seen does have it. It feels like a
small bump on top. Soak the cat inlet where it slides onto the
y-pipe and let it sit for a while. I used a Dremel tool to cut
down one side of the cat inlet pipe, got in there with a chisel
and hammer and opened up the area where I cut it with the
Dremel. Then I got on the other end of the cat and started to
push and pull sideways on the cat to loosen it up at the area
I cut and chiseled open. I kept shooting PB Blaster on it and
soon it was loose, save for the tiny weld...After I got it cut
thru the old cat about fell off on it's own..

I dont think I have a weld on there, I looked forever with a mirror and felt all around it but found nothing. I've got a dremel, what bit did you use to cut through it....The only thing that would cut through it are those little discs for cutting through plastic and such, I dont think it would cut through the metal. Which bit did you use?

I used those disc's you're talking about. They're the cutoff discs
that come in a the little round container. Just take your time.
I went thru maybe 10/12 of them before I got it where I could
see where the merge pipe ended when it was slid into the cats
inlet tube. I cut maybe 4" back on both sides, then got the
chisel out and opened the cuts up..Dremel also makes a heavier
duty disc that will work good too..

my cat was bolted to the heat sheld i did not see it and keep hiting it with a hammer and beat the hell out of the cat but it had bolts in it
