My 2002 2WD was having some really strange starting and electrical issues over the last week. It would happen randomly with no pattern.

You could turn the key and the engine would turn like it wanted to start, if you gassed it it would start, then as soon as you let your foot off the gas it would just rev down and die.

Sometimes it would also start, run ok, until you put it in reverse or drive, then it would rev down to like 200RPM for a sec then sputter and die.

But usually you would get into it, turn the key, and the power would just cut off entirely, come back on after a few on its own, until you turned the key again.

Then I pulled this thing that was behind the rear view out of it and its had 0 issues since. The Check Engine light that was intermittent for the MAF sensor hasnt popped back up either. The battery is new and I tested the alternator, fine as well.

Anybody know exactly what this is? When it warms up outside I’d like to remove the wiring and whatever else is with it. I've heard aftermarket remote stuff can cause issues but wow.

Thanks

If everything is OK with it out. Leave it out. You are correct that aftermarket remote and security systems can cause all kinds of issues.
The picture appears to be of the antenna for either a Pro Start or Cool Start remote starting system. There are numerous models that use a similar antenna either 1 or 2 way. The 2 way will have an FCC number on it.
I've attached the installation PDF for one of them. See page 22. It doesn't tell you very much except why it was where it was.

Those aftermarket remote starters are a nightmare. Since you have a 2002, it will be a chip key. If the remote start is setting off the immobilizer, it could be cutting the fuel (pump, or injector signal). I would try to rip every last remnant of it out and tidy up the wiring. I've heard too many stories of those things sending cars to the wrecker

The chip is in the ignition switch. I have an 02 and it's not in the key like the one on my 05 GP.
Those keys are bulkier.
Irrelevant anyway, it's the remote that's the issue. But like I said above it removing the antenna cures the problem simply leave it at home. Tearing out the wiring for the remote is a job for a specialist or an automotive electrician.

It seems strange to me that the antenna can cause these issues. Alot of remote starters will have a starter kill. You must also properly bypass the factory security system when installing one. I think GM was still using passlock II in these years but, I'm not positive. I haven't installed one in quite some time.

I'd think it would work the other way around. Run good when the antenna is in it and not when removed. As an additional theft deterrent.

Actually, the issue popped back up yesterday unfortunately. Very confusing. I was able to restart by using my portable jumper, but I only had to have it attached, I didn’t have to wait for a charge at all. Then it was ok again for the day.

i disconnected my battery overnight to hopefully clear the computers cache so we’ll see what happens this evening.
