I have been thinking about this swap and recently lots of questions have come up about it. I was originally going to use a C5 wheel. The airbag type is the same as the s10, but the connector is different. I asked a gm tech who did the swap. (Mike over at ZR2USA) He said he soldered the s10 connector to the vette, pretty sure it was the clock spring connector to airbag. The splines for the C5 match the s10 so it would be an easy swap. While researching at corvetteforum I came across and c6 to c5 steering wheel swap. I really like the c6 wheel better. The problem is the center section of the c5 wheel had to be removed and welded to the c6 wheel while the airbag is left non functioning. I want to find out what can and can not be swapped. Currently I am trying to source a c6 airbag that has been deployed to get a look at the igniter, it might match the size of the c5 or s10 airbags. I got this idea from a lexus wheel swap where they had to switch the airbag igniters to make the airbag functional again. There was talk over at the corvette forum, but no one followed up. I will try to fill those gaps. Here are some pics of the c5 and c6 wheels and airbags.

good thing about the c6 wheel is it is shared by the cobalt and HHR so there easy to find cheaper then the c5 wheel. I will update soon.

I already found a source for the deployed airbags. Ill have some in a week or two.

I would love to swap to any smaller diameter wheel and keep the airbag. Do you have the link to C5 wheel swap details? I have a Momo race wheel and adapter at home but I really don't want to ditch the airbag if I can avoid it. I've been lucky in a few bad wrecks and would prefer to have that option!

small update, Im heading out today to pick up interior panels and such for the jimmy, but im stopping to check out a 2006 corvette. The whole steering column with wheel. He said the blown airbag might be there but he thinks the bag was pulled or cut out. As long as the igniter in there im good. The price for the whole column and wheel is cheaper then the wheel by it self.

picked up wheel with blown airbag and the column. Not a bad score for $40.00 Ill post pics later. I need to source a blown s10 airbag, anyone have one to send me? ill cover shipping.

I need a blown s10 airbag to see if I can make it work. If it does, the original clockspring can be used and the only issue is the splines to mate it to the shaft.

pulled apart the column and wonder if the top portion of the shafts where they pivot are similar. I might be able to swap them out. Not likely this easy but we will see.

I got the corvette column apart and here is a pic, the length is approx. 7.75", it be a direct swap.

The s10 upper shaft GM 26064247 will interchage with these vehicles, this proves the c5 wheel will swap over with only airbag wiring needed to be worked out. From what I read and hear the corvette airbag connector needs to be soldered to the s10 clockspring in place of the s10 airbag connector.

well I am not having much luck finding a broke column for this one piece. I might chance it and pull mine apart. In the mean time does anyone have an airbag they have laying around and willing to give up in the name of research! If I can find a way to swap the bag unit in I will. I might have to get a few parts machined. I am pretty sure any mod to the airbag system is a no no, but ill chance it to have a functional airbag. The machining will to be make a base plate to attach the igniter to the bag unit.

I got an airbag on the way for 98-up. I got my hands on a 97 airbag and its too big to use.
