Buying a crate 3.4 next month. A couple questions

38979 Views 304 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  Rhotpursuit
Well, I just got a new job that puts me in a position to where I have less time on my hands than usual. However, it puts a lot more money in my pocket, so instead of rebuilding this 3.4 I have, I am going to buy me a crate motor so I can put it in the truck in just a few days and be up and going. I have a question or two, and also add to this list if you can think of anything else.

1. I need to get a flexplate from a 87 or newer motor
2. I am converting over to a serpentine setup from the vee setup on the 84 motor. I am going to need a newer 87+ oil pan as well correct?
3. I'll need an electric fuel pump (I already have). Does anybody have a picture of their fuel pump install? Which lines are which on the 84? If I remember correctly, are the lines not differently located on the EFI trucks than the older carbed trucks? I mean like which size line is the the pickup, and which is the return line?

Am I forgetting anything?

Also, I have a disassembled 3.4 for sale. Nothing internally wrong as near as I can tell. I'll sell it for a $100 bill as long as you are comfortable with the freight charges or picking it up in McCalla, Alabama, which is inbetween Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. PM me if you are interested in it. I'll put it on ya! SInce it is disassembled, I could potentially freight the block, and ship the cam, pistons and assorted parts through UPS which might be cheaper.

Oh yeah! ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!:haha:

if you are using a gm crate motor use the flywheel that comes with the motor ,you will need a timing cover from a 87 newer rwd motor as well as the water pump if your going to a single belt .the oil pan that comes with the crate motor is for a 2wd if you have a 4wd it will need to be changed to a 4wd oil pan .i just done this swap and it was fairly easy 3.4 is a great engine

Yeah, I forgot to mention, I already have the front cover. I bought it a couple of years ago from another forum member.

That is cool! The motor comes with the flexplate (auto)?

The truck is 2wd, but won't I have to use the new model oilpan to work with the newer model front cover, or are the pans the same?

I plan on using the F body water pump I have lying around to go on the motor since I have an electric fan setup on the truck.
Yes, you have to use the newer oil pan as well, since the front flange is different between old and new front covers/oil pans.
the crate engine comes with the f body cover so all you need is the f body style water pump use the pan that comes with the engine since you are putting it in a 2wd .
the engine comes with the auto flywheel you need be sure to use it .
Well kick ass! I was about to go wrangle a flexplate from a junkyard donor.

I'm confused though now....The crate engine comes with the F-body front cover? If this is supposed to be a drop in for 82-85 and that was the case, you would have a problem using the F-body reverse flow front cover with the non-reverse water pump that came off of the 2.8 right?
The front cover is the same, or nearly the same between the late model RWD 2.8 and the 3.4, both have reverse rotation water pumps. Note these are not "reverse flow" engines. The coolant still flows in the same direction, just the water pump rotates in reverse compared to the older water pumps.
See, that's what I mean. If the 3.4 is similar to the 87+ front cover, then the oil pan that comes with the 3.4 is not going to work with the F-body or later model S-10 front cover....right? To make this work, I'll need an oil pan from a 87+ 2.8 truck, and a cover from the same.

The poster earlier says the crate engine comes with the F-body front cover...If it does, then it would have the reverse swirls in the cover...which doesn't jive with the 82-85 water pump that is supposed to work with that cover. Does the crate engine have an F body or late model S-10 style cover (as in fits like F body), but has swirls in the housing like the 82-85? If that's the case, it's not going to work with the F-body water pump.....or am I just nutz?

if you use the f body cover that comes with the engine you have to use a f body water pump from a 93-95 because the water outlet for your bottom radiator hose will be on the oppisite side .you can see what i,m saying when you get your engine .if you have any more ?'s give me a yell thanks

The pics I have seen shows a flexplate/flywheel(not sure which from what I've seen)included. The pics also show an F-Body front cover, and I did not see any timing tab, so how the hell do they expect you to drop it into the 82-85 trucks?
After seeing the price I'm glad I got the deal I got!

The timing cover included on the 3.4 is designed for pre-85' applications with "V" belt driven water pump

Makes me wonder what I am really getting! So what is going here basically is the front cover is actually a hybrid cover, meaning that it fits like an 82-86, but has the swirls of a 87+ or an F-body? I think we're overthinking it here. I think what it is in reality is an old school 82-86 pan mated to an old school 82-86 regular swirl pattern, regular flanged front cover, since the truck is supposed to be for vee belts, it would have to use that cover with that swirl pattern for the regular rotation water pump, or the truck will run hot.

That being said, I think that means since I am going to a serp system that I need to use my 87+ S10 front cover along with an 87+ oil pan from an S10.....

Correct me if I am in error.

I'm not real happy with what a new oil pan costs. I might go get one from the junkyard because I'm a cheapass. I noticed that possibly an 87+ -92? Camaro is also the same as the truck? The local pull a part has the price set at $16 and change for a stock pan vs $70 and up at the parts house for an aftermarket pan that might not fit right. Any input on that?

On top of that, a pan gasket is around $20!

Just buy a new pan, don't screw around with a used pan that may leak in a year or two, because it's already getting crusty.

I bought a new pan for my Franken60 build a few years ago, and it was worth it.

It was on the truck for over 2 years, before I decided to take the truck apart. I still have that pan, and other than the couple modifications I made to it for the turbo oil drain back and crank trigger clearancing still looks practically new. I know if I tried to use a used oil pan, that came with the engine I built I would have had problems.
Got the 3.4!!! A couple questions

What I am afraid of is a crappy fitting aftermarket pan and I don't want chrome, because that is guaranteed to leak. Do you know if your pan was an aftermarket or factory?
It was bought through a GM dealer, but not sure if it was a GM OEM pan or an aftermarket replacement. I've never seen a chrome pan for the 2.8, so I don't think you need to worry about that.

I still have mine, if you don't mind the modifications I have done to it, I can sell it to you.
Well, I can get a new one for about $65-70 shipped about that close thereabouts. Make me an offer I can't refuse. It is for the 87+ model right?
Okay, explain this! I guess I will see what is really on there when it arrives!
