I have a '98 reg cab shortbed. Is it better to have a sub mounted in a slim box in the cab (kicker comp 10" sub in a truck box) or to mount the sub in a bigger box in the bed?

Like was said, unless you do a blowthru, mounting the speaker in the bed is a bad idea. Blowthru's are my favorite install type in regular cabs, but you really dont need one for a single 10 setup. Just build a slim box behind your seat(s).

Correct. A blow-through is cutting the sheet metal between the cab and bed (putting in an accordian type boot to re-seal the area) and mounting the box in the bed with the subs firing into the passenger compartment, thru the newly made hole. This gives almost limitless enclosure space (the size of your bed) but still maintains a small passenger compartment (smaller airspace means more pressure build up which equals more SPL).
