I bought my first car and S10 a couple weeks back. The guy told me there was an oil leak but I bought it anyway, I figured I'd fix it, even though I've never worked on a car before. The starter seems to have some oil leaking on it as well the oil pan? (does that make sense? it's a big gray box with a hole in the back of it). I've been reading that if there is oil on the starter then it might have something to do with the rear main seal leaking and that I'd have to pull the engine or transmission out in order to replace that... is that true? Should I start with replacing the starter or will that not fix the problem?

start with a can of engine cleaner and a hose- wash the block down. Usually oil on starter is from ABOVE- valve cover. Wash and drive as normal and check daily with a flashlight.If you are getting a puddle in the driveway- fix soonest- a little drip - fix when you get to it.

Could be the valve cover as mentioned above, also could be leaking from the distributor seal or leaking from the back of the intake manifold those are all possibilities.

If you cannot pin point the leak easily then you can purchase a oil leak detection kit which has UV dye in it then you will know for certain where it is coming from.

And on the topic of oil leaks since you say this is your first vehicle I have never seen a S10 or Blazer that does not have engine oil cooler lines at least seeping although this has nothing to do with oil on your starter it is something you want to check out and verify because if you aren't paying attention it could cost you an engine. It will be the lines going from the oil filter to the radiator.
