Can anyone tell me how many splines are on the oem 8.5 & 8.6 rear ends. I hear 28 in some places and 30 in another.
I don't know and can't find it. I know someone here is sitting on correct answer.
Thanks guys,
Ron
I think it depends on year and application the newer ones are 30 spline I think but I'm no expert. There are others on here that know more specifics than I do but if you are doing a V8 swap you definitely want 30.
As far as I know all 8.5 and 8.6 GM corporate rear ends had 30 spline axles after '90. The S series 8.5 might have been an exception. The 8.5 was upgraded to 8.6 in '99 and all of them should have 30 spline axles.

I just bought 3:42 from 99 Blazer 2dr, 4.3, 5 spd. RPO tag didn't say G80 though. I'm going to try to pull cover tomorrow, and see if I'm going to have to buy posi or not. I'll count while I'm there and make sure what it is. Buy of century though, 100.00. I guess it being 5 spd v6 made it 8.5.

Greetings all! - I am a fan of this site, great info and guides. I picked up a 98 s10 Single cab 2.2 5 speed. It won't win best in show or spank a Fiat-- however it saved my buns taking me early to work and late to school!
However now after several repairs (fuel pump, filter, relay, clutch...
Truck is a 95, 2.2, T5 tranny. I just replaced the engine due to a rod knock, running on three cylinders, and crazy timing chain rattle. This could have been doing this before but there woulda been no way to really hear it. I've narrowed it down to the flywheel cracked or the pressure plate...
1. I kicked the 95 4.3 down one day and BROKE the tranny case. Broke teeth off the reaction clutch (dont do that,, it leads to walking)
Two tricks to get the trans out more easily
a. there was a bellhouse bolt that was very difficult to reach (upper left of the trans tunnel as you sit in the...

So I’m about to pull a tranny and tcase our of my 1996 Chevy s10 to put in a 1995 Chevy blazer. Same motor and also 4x4. Is there any differences in the transmission and tcase. Or is it going to be a more difficult job? I’m new at working on my trucks.
