I'd wait on any guessing until your engine/transmission are in place. I was able to use my stock d/l without any mods.

A 98 is 25 years old and you want to back another 20 years for your engine? Hopefully you don't need to pass emission testing.
Which engine?
Which trans?
Hard to say if it'll fit w/o knowing what you got.

The 700r4 came out in 82, so if it's from an 1980 Camaro it's not a 4 speed automatic.
The 2004R started in 81. I don't believe that was ever put in the F bodies.

Please remember that a 700R4 is not a four speed automatic like a Muncie 4 speed shift. On an automatic the 4th gear is overdrive. You have a 3 speed automatic with overdrive. If you are racing someone you never shift past 3rd gear. If you do you will blow the trans.

Post a pic of the trans. I couldn't find those numbers anywhere, although 5YP1 does sound like a GM broadcast code.
The 3970010 is correct era and size for a 350. It was used for 3 different engine sizes, the 307,327,350. Gm put engines built on that block in everything they made from 69-80.

Typically with GM transmission codes the first number is the year. 5 would be 85. The second letter is application. Y is Corvette. BUT yours has a Camaro tail housing. My guess would be someone built that trans using a Corvette main case and installed a Camaro out put shaft and tailhousing. The Corvette is shorter and does not have the holes for the mount for the torque arm.
It's not uncommon when transmissions are assembly line style remanufactured for the cases to get switched around.
The Corvette trans is no different internally. It did use a better servo, but that's added outside near the end of the build and the fact that parts are mismatched it may or may not have the beefier servo. It's a $30 part you can install.
