Sorry to disagree, but my 92 Slonoma ST has a 3.42 and the housing
is a 7.50. I'm looking for the 3.72-8.5 rear axle. Hard to find, and if
I come across one it'll be a fortune.

7.5 and 7.625 is the same housing. just differenet ring gear size.
some of the newer 2wd trucks with a 4.3 w code motor with a 5 speed have 8.5" rearends. but only have 3.08 gears.

How can I find out if I have a 7.5 or 7.62 rear? The ring gears are not interchangeable between the two, right?

They do interchange, you can take a 7.5 ring and pinion out of a rear and put a 7.625 in it's place with no problems.
