I am thinking about doing a 6 speed swap, and I wanted to know if there is any difference in performance. Will the truck be slower, quicker, or the same as with the 5 speed. I know that I will need to change gears in the rear as well. But for the time being I will have to keep the stock gears.

Why will you need to change the gears in your rear end? I don't know if it will be faster, but you should get better gas mileage because the 6th gear is alot higher than in our 5-speeds. The T-56 also has alot better feel to it and is more than twice as strong. Whenever I get the money I'm getting one.

Is this the six speed that would normally be found in say a Camaro or Trans Am? attached to an LS1 engine? If it is I just can't see the sixth gear being usable on a 4.3 Even on a 300 plus HP SS or WS6 TA flooring the pedal while in sixth gear is sort of like driving a civic....no response at all. I wouldnt think the 4.3 would be able t push it.

samdog do you have any info on the swap that I could get from you? Did you notice a performance diff when you did the swap? would you go with shorter gears if you had to do it over? what kind of rpms are you turning on the highway?

This T-56 is the T-56 you would want with higher torque motors that run higher rpms.

First 2.97:1, Second 2.07:1, Third 1.43:1, Forth 1.00:1, Fifth 0.80:1, Sixth 0.62:1, Reverse 3.28:1 This is the one more suited for the RPM range and rear gear ratios our trucks have. This would go good with a 3.42-3.73 rear. Makes 3rd pull better!! Little wider ratio which is more suited for a truck. Close ratio like that other is ok, but not suited for the power outputs and rpms ranges we have.

you use the 6th gear cruising at like 80 and you'll get really good gas mileage...alot better than the 20 mpg my truck averages.

I get about 24mpg on the highway with 4.10 gears. I also have a 275/40 r17 in the back. If you are going to do the swap, i would say go with 4.10's. I had 3.73's and i didn't like them at all off the line. BTW, at 80 mph i'm at exactly 2300 rpm.

I have a 1994 Z28 LT1 350 with the T56. The transmission is a much more refined unit. The shifting is smoother and has a better feel. My Z28 gets about 28 MPG on the highway. But that is a Camaro not an S10. As for putting in a truck, I would highly recommended the 4.10 gears. I would imagine that if you put a T56 between a 4.3 V6 and 3.08 gear, you would never be able to use 6th gear. With the .50 overdrive, you will not have the ill MPG effects of the 4.10. My Z28 has the factory 3.42 gear and it does have a hard time pushing 6th gear up a hill. The 6th gear is only able to be used a speeds over 60 MPH. If I had a 4.10 or even a 3.73, it would make 6th gear more useable. I remember that the 1993 Z28’s came with two different versions of the T56. One was a close ratio that had 3.23 gears, the other was wide ratio that had 3.08 gears. I may be wrong on the ratios, but there were to different versions. In 1994 & on, all Z28’s had 3.42’s and the same transmission. The 1994+ is the one with the .50 6th gear. I would say that the 1993 wide ratio would probably be the best one. But I do not know anything about a T56 in an S10, I only know of my T56 in my Z28 that I have enjoyed for ten years. Hope this helps, Shimaze
