I have a 2002 s-10 with a 4cyl, 5spd trans. when the truck is idling, and the transmission is in neutral there is a slight gear chatter noise. sometimes it is louder than others, if you press in on the clutch it stops. the noise has always been there and the dealer tells me it is vibrations from the engine carrying into the input shaft. If this is true, is this going to create a problem later on. Or is this what the noise really is? Thanks for your help

There shouldn't hear any noise from your tranny if you seat in your truck (especially a 2002, low miles I persume). I would go to a different dealer, or get a mechanic opinion.

What you are hearing is the counter shaft free wheeling. With the clutch out, the input shaft still turns the counter shaft. Some times the gears drag the synchro's and make a different noise.

Make sure your fluid level is up.
