I'm new to this site and just want a little info. I'm this close :D to buying a 98 ss (yes vin matches) and I want to know what the top speed possible is on the 4.3? Vin code W. I will be adding open exhaust, cold air intake, throttle blade mod, and a hypertech programmer. Plus H rated tires. So will it do 128 or above if I set the programmer to that? Tired of people on full size forums telling me to do a 10000 dollar motor swap. I want it as is, original. Thanks!

I've had mine to it's shut-off speed (128 with JET tuner) plenty of times. It's damned stable, too. But, it's lowered in addition to the factory drop, still has the factory rake (the 3/4"-1" difference that everybody likes to level out), and the air dam is actually a functional part. It takes a long time to get to that speed, but that's because of the weak and choked 4.3. To give you a more realistic number, I'd say your truck would essentially "top out" around 105 or so before it really just stops pulling. With enough road you could hit a higher speed, but the distance required is a bit impractical.

With out the governor I'd say a stock truck isn't going to go much faster than 115. It's hard to get hard to get a brick to go much faster. I've actually had my truck to the point it was running out of gear (trans doesn't shift in OD at WOT). Using online calculators (3.42 gears, 25.7" tire, 5500rpm) I was apparently doing 123mph.

It takes a long time to get there, yes. Keep that in mind dude. It takes around 40 seconds for my blazer to get to its shutoff point at 98mph. My Xtreme had the top speed removed, but its been a while since I took it to 115, so I'm not sure how long it actully took it...

4.3's deliver torque, not speed.

It sounds like you are trying to get into a lot of trouble, unless you have a nice stretch of road to test your truck on lol.
I have had my truck to its top speed once or twice over the years. The last time was about a year ago. I had a ton of road in front of me, and had my Garmin GPS on. I had the opening so I went for it. I think I was on a slight downhill when I first punched it at 65. The speedo moved way too fast so I think I was on a downhill. But once I got over 100 it definetly was flat or a slight incline. I have to feather the throttle over 105 or the trans will try to downshift (automatic) Once I hit 115 on the GPS I had enough, it was working hard, and I wasn't trying to die over 2 more mph. I don't see these trucks, at least not an automatic getting over 125.

My biggest concern is if I hit a dip in the road my front tires might rub and at that speed, who knows if they'll shred apart. I try to drive safe :haha:

Trying to "top out" a factory pickup truck is not only stupid...its dangerous, also knowing that more than likely, you plan on doing this on public roads...Makes me wish a Mack truck takes you out before you injure or kill an inocent person...

98 can't be. I had mine up to 100 on the highway once. It didn't take much to get there either. I didn't even realize it till i looked down and saw the speedo. it was quite smooth at that speed

Your a tool.
*You're* BTW

REALLY? And encouraging a 19 year old to take a truck that was never designed to break 98mph out on a public road and see "how fast it'll go" is a fucking glorious idea....

I had a 4wd S-10 that would do an easy 115mph in a 1/4 mile, but never would I attempt to top it out on the highway. Thats stupid, and dangerous.

Yup...Public safety, reason, logic, and law are all just terrible things that should just be ignored by all teenagers. While we're at it lets go drink a 12 pack and drive home afterwards, cause hell, we all know there's no harm in it right?

you fucking clown
