Recently hit a deer and it stuck on my front tow hook and dragged under my truck on the side the gear box is. my steering was alright before i hit it, had some play but then went extremely sloppy so i put a new gearbox in but the steering wheel is still not right. I assumed the gearbox did not need to be adjusted and i put it straight in. Any advice on if i need to adjust it being new and how much would be awesome.

Did you carefully examine the other front end components for signs of damage (bent, connections, bushings, etc.)? I would have started there rather than jumping straight to the gear box. If you're unsure, or unable to determine the cause, take it to a reputable qualified shop and have them diagnose it and provide a quote to fix it. And, an alignment will also be in order.

yes i had been putting in new parts in the front end when i had hit it so its easy for me to tell if somethings bent or off on that side of it but im still checking because its easy to over look things. I definatly have been thinking on the taking it in side of it since i had already done alot of work before the deer hit. the gear box i had an idea that it was going to need a new one before i hit it as i had tightend the old one up and it had some play still. Thank you for the reply!

Also, don't forget to check the rag joint on the steering shaft - it is a wear item that can result in 'sloop' in the steering.

If steering has slop in straight ahead position, usually not hard to find exact source with helper slowly cycling wheel back and forth where it's loose.
Any quality reman box will be adjusted rite or should be returned as defective
