Hi all,
Looking for some help in narrowing down an annoying ticking sound. The motor is in a 2003 GMC Sonoma it has 151,000 miles and has 1K miles on a fresh oil change(Pensoil High Milage 5w30). I started hearing a rattling/ticking sound several weeks ago about 4 days after oil change and thought it was my belt tensioner. I have replaced the belt and tensioner and the problem continued, so I took the belt back off and ran it without the belt and the same noise can still be heard, with the belt off I could isolate the sound to the rear of the motor.


I have always just used regular conventional oil, but since I was unable to do the last change myself because of leg surgery I decided have it done at a chain, and opted for the high milage since the regular was pretty low end oil.


Here some details to help.
Oil pressure seems to be normal.
On a cold start, the noise is not detectable.
Gets louder as the vehicle gets warmer.
intensity increases as rpms increase, at shift it seems to get a little quicker and louder. IT is the loudest in 1st and 2nd gear but only on the top end of each gear, quites down in 3rd to 4th, not noticeable at high-speed cruising.
The computer is showing no codes so seems Knock sensor is fine and not detecting knock or pinging.
I have no leaks or other causes of lost fluids, no loss of power or other performance issues, starts easily, idles and accelerates smoothly.


Here is a link to a video, my phone picks up every noise and amplifies it, but if you listen to when I open the throttle you can hear the specific noise I am talking about.


Any help is apreciated.

Wow, that sounds really loud in the video. Is it that loud in person?
Is it an automatic or stick? On another vehicle i have owned, a flywheel bolt had backed out amd was hitting the bell housing and it sounded like a rod knock. Maybe you have something similar?

Or maybe a something sticking? Run some atf through the engine for a half an hour and drain the oil. Refill with whatever oil and run again for half and hourish and than do a normal oil/filter change. The atf might ungunk something and clear up the trouble.

Just add a quart in place of a regular quart of oil and it will clean the heck out of your engine's insides

When I am in the truck driving it can be hard to hear unless there is no other vehicles around or I am next to something like a concrete barrier. Yes it is an automatic.
I tried adding 5oz of Seafoam(250 miles ago) and it does seem to of improved it very slightly.
The service manager at the GMC dealership recommended fillilngit completely with ATF and letting it idle for 8 hours, but it seems that Amsoil Engine Flush works a lot better so I am going to try that this weekend.



So I will be trying the following in steps to see of anything works.


1. Drain oil and refill with fresh and run the Amsoil flush, then change oil and filter.
2. Use Amsoil Power Foam and some Redline fuel System cleaner.
3. New Plugs and Wires( way over due anyway).
4. Pull valve cover and check everything(torque on rockers, is anything stuck)
5. If none of the above works I am going to start pulling lifters and looking for flat spots, pits or other issues.
6. Pull the head(If I have to go this far I will have a refurbished one ready to go and a new cam) fingers crossed it doesnt go this far.

hopefully the flush fixes it.


that atf cleaning is an old school fix. my dad told me that years ago (I am 43) and he said it was something they did every once in a while when he worked at a garage doing oil changes in the 70s. I know it works for cleaning out built up gunk though because I would do it on the company trucks and some of the sludge and junk that came out was amazing.

I’ve seen so many 4.0 Jeep Cherokees do that I can’t even count..:haha:

Ran the Amsoil Motor Flush, changed oil and filter. Noise is still there.


Drain plug magnet had a lot of the grey metalic sludge and Chia pet appearance. Nothing large, so either the Amsoil flushed out a 150K miles worth of crud or I have something getting tore up. No gold or copper look to it, oil did not have a metalic sheen to it.


I will do another change in a couple of weeks and see how it looks.
