recently bought an 87 s15 2.5.. its timing was way off causing it to backfire terribly under load. so i fixed the timing and it was running fine until i ran out of gas. now it wont start. i have fuel at the tbi but im not getting spark. changed the cap and rotor on dist. ignition coil tested fine but the ignition control modual tested bad so i replaced it also replaced spark plugs and wires have right resistance. but im still not getting spark. does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

Do you have a tachometer on your car? If you do have one, crank the car and see if the tachometer moves. Although the car is not going to turn over because you don't have spark, the tachometer should still bounce around. If tachometer doesn't bounce around, then get a simple digital multi-meter, and check the resistance of the pickup coil, inside the distributor unit. If you found your ICM, the pickup coil connector is already easy to find.

There could be many culprits for no spark, so best to do the easy stuff first :). Oh, even if you don't have access to a tachometer, I would check the resistance of the pickup coil anyways

sorry for the delay ran out of funds. the coil is good i replaced the pick up coil without the pigtail, i didnt check the one with pigtail. and replaced the ignition control module/hall effect switch and the starter is good. im lost now im still not getting any spark.

hall effect is one of the pickups, one with wide shutters blade rather then the pointed reluctor, though that i believe used for reference to ecm and dont effect spark for cranking,

Then it is most likely your pickup coil with the pigtail. Recently I was talking to a local mechanic about my truck and he said that my pickup coil with the pigtail was fine because if it was bad the motor wouldn't start at all. Replacing that involves taking the distributor out and taking it apart.

so i finally got spark going. it turned out to be the pick up coil and a weak coil. the spark was to weak to jump from the rotor to the cap but thats fixed now. now im not getting fuel injected. it will start if i pour gas into the throttle body but then it dies, the injector is just spraying fumes. the fuel pump is priming when i turn the key. could it just be a clogged fuel filter now.? what would cause just fumes to come out of the injector?

ive ruled out bad fuel filter. i have pressure at my injector. when the key is turned on i repeatedly connect and disconnect the battery. thats the only time the injector will fire. the injector wont respond when in try to start it and it wont respond to the gas pedal. any ideas? maybe the fuel pressure regulator?

I believe hall effect helps signal the injectors pulse, should not effect a no spark situation, just a no signal to ecm🙂
