Alright, Im looking at getting an S-10. What do you guys recommend as far as the engine. I've driven both then 4.3 and the 2.2s. What is the lifespan on the 2.2L and what kind of gas mileage are you guys pulling?
A gently driven, well maintained 2.2 should last 200,000 miles.
I get about 28-30 mpg, but your milage varies greatly on driving conditions/habits. I just pulled my worst milage ever on Sunday, 22 mpg. This is with about 800 pounds in the bed (snowmobile, tools, etc), trying to hold 75mph+ through hills and valleys, and in a hell of a rain storm.
My 2.2L has 103k on it and I get 22mpg on the street. Shifting at 4500. I get 28 on the freeway holding it at 90mph 4000RPMS with a 650 jet ski in the back and a weeks worth of cloths for 2 people a ice chest and gas.
I get around 23 mpgs in my 03 std cab 2200 auto. 2.2's are really solid engines and pretty old skool in design, if you just keep the oil changed and don't overheat it you shouldn't have any serious problems throughout its lifetime. I have had 2.2 L4 Chevy Beretta's that have lasted to 200k and then some! (I've owned 2 of those)
The 98-03 2200 engines may last even longer than the 2.2, with the redesigned cylinder head and roller rockers.
50,000 miles in a year is like over-the-road trucking company mileage for big rigs! Thats wild! You would have to fill up the gas tank every other day at that rate.. I gassed up my truck Monday, here it is Wednesday and I'm at 3/4 of a tank already :-(
