Hello, first post on this forum. I've been having a problem. I was driving the other day and it seemed like all of a sudden I had no gears, almost like the clutch was not disengaging. The clutch fluid was full but I noticed the master/slave cylinder hadn't been replaced in a while. I bought a replacement prefilled kit and they look exactly the same but for some reason I'm having trouble installing the slave cylinder into the side of the transmission. Almost like the fork it's pushing against isn't going far enough back. I can't seem to get the slave cylinder installed. Should I need to pry the transmission fork back to install the slave cylinder or is there an internal problem with the transmission?

No. Don't pry on anything. You are effectively operating clutch with your hand. You're not strong enough.

Open the bleed valve on the slave cylinder, push in place, attach nuts loosely, tighten bleed screw, tighten nuts.
Bleed air out of system.

I forgot to mention "Close your eyes" when installing with bleeder open. Because fluid is going to spray out.
Typically, the slave cylinder is installed dry without the hydraulic hose attached.
You could remove hose. But that'll spill fluid too. Opening the bleeder is quicker.

Thank you for the help, I was able to get it on this morning. Now I'm bleeding it

So the clutch has been bleed and now I am noticing that even when the slave cylinder pushes the clutch fork the clutch is still not engaging. Could the clutch be fried? I noticed a good amount clutch materiel when removing the plate next to the slave cylinder. Any ideas would help. Next step would be dropping the transmission to check the status of the clutch and flywheel.

Hang on.
It just stopped moving while in any gear?
Will it not shift gears while it is running and grind them instead? Or shifts but doesn't move?

What kind of debris did you see with slave cy6out? Black dust, or pieces of disc material? If any pieces larger than dust, the disc is shot.
To get a better look, you can remove the rectangular inspection plate next to slave cylinder and take a look around inside. A mirror & flashlight helps. Ask someone to operate clutch while you're looking in there.

If it looks ok and will shift into any gear while running, here I'll throw out other possibilities to save time

I'm assuming it's 2wd since you didn't mention it being 4WD or trying to shift the transfer case.

-Rear differential. Does driveshaft turn but not wheels?

-Transmission:
Was the transmission noisy before?
Input shaft could have stripped. Not uncommon in a noisy T5. Try 4th gear, see if it moves. Its direct drive, so if only input to cluster gear set stripped it will still move.

I can hear the transmission shifting into gears but the clutch will not disengage. So if the truck is idling and I put it into gear, let clutch out, the truck still sits there idling like the clutch was never released. And yeah, the materiel was larger than dust.

The transmission has always been a little noisy, I bought the truck about a year ago and there has always been a little noise

Last time I drove it (when it broke down) there was also a pretty good vibration going on when the rpm got higher, very noticable when I cold started it that morning.

You'd hear a worn out or shredded clutch squealing while it was slipping. It would have produced smoke & odor at some point.
The T5 input shaft bearing is notorious for loosening up and allowing the input shaft to wobble & wear out it's gear and the counter gear on the cluster. It would make a racket long before it failed, similar to a bad throw out bearing. If the transmission leaks, and ran low, the same would happen.
Anyway, it's going to take hands on inspection to figure it out.

So I have a 95 gmc Sonoma that was making noise in the transmission for a while and on way to work this morning I lost all gears but 4th like you described in your post….how do I go about fixing that?

You should start a new thread and post a link to this one, rather than hijack it. It also makes it easier for others to stay on point without having to keep track of who they're replying to.

Wasn’t trying to steal any attention from original post I’m new to any of these forums or anything like this. My apologies. Your comment helped me out tremendously though so thanks I’ll start a new thread
