Hello all,
I’m brand new to the forum. My 02 S10 will be cruising along at 40-60 miles an hour and the truck will randomly start to surge. If I hit the gas, it stops. Any ideas as to what might cause the issue. Also, the truck has a P0102 (mass airflow sensor circuit lean)

When was your last tune up?

A P0102 can be caused by a vacuum leak. Inspect all your vacuum hoses. At 20+ years old you could well have some cracked or rotted ones. A poor connection at the sensor could cause it also. Unplug it and plug it back in a couple times. A dirty air filter can cause it. You can also try cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner. All these are possible causes for poor driveability. A new cap rotor and plugs wouldn't hurt. My 02 4.3 was faintly surging and I found the tip of my rotor was gone. Worst case you might need a new MAF. For both the tune up and new MAF use only original replacement parts. 4.3L engines are touchy about cheap replacement parts.

can you do the work your truck needs? If no, a trip to the shop it needs.
since you dont know if any maintenance was done, oil change, trans fluid change, spark plugs, air filter, clean MAF, change fuel filter are just a few of the things needed to be done.

If you have any oil leaks, they are also vacuum leaks. Start with a smoke test, or hitting any seeping gaskets with unlit propane while watching fuel trims. To do that, you’ll need a scan tool, or an Elm Bluetooth OBD2 dongle and any number of free or cheap phone apps. Torque Pro is pretty good if you have an Android.

Hi guys, all vacuum leaks have been sealed as well as oil leaks. Oil was changed as well as MAF, coolant, and thermostat. I had a P1870 pop up a few weeks ago, I cleared the code and it hasn’t come back, but the surge is still present. Ignition has been gone through and spark plugs and wires, and distributor and ignition module have been replaced. Only thing I can come up with it the TCC valve. Any ideas on what might cause this?

That P1870 is telling you what the problem is. Your TCC lockup valve is leaking. It's common for them to wear their bore in the valve body and leak. You basically have a small steel piston sliding back and forth constantly in an aluminum bore. It eventually wears the bore enough where it starts to let fluid pass by rather than move it. It's a relatively easy fix. You'll need to remove the pan and filter from the trans and install a repair kit. The easiest is the Fitzall kit. And just $20. Their valve has o-rings that are capable of compensating for the wear. The valve originally was just a very tight precision fit.
