Been a while. Firebird’s 95% done, S10 is still running great. The LT4/T56 makes for a fun parts getter.

My first venture into Mopar is quite the undertaking. I picked up this 1966 Barracuda after finding it locally. Guy was asking $1,200 for it. I went and looked at it and after him seeing me noticing all the hidden rot, he said $500 takes it.

I got it home and found 70% of it was there. From what I can gather, it was last on the road in Florida in 1982. It was a 273 2 bbl V8 with a 904 auto. Original paint was light blue and dark blue interior with power steering, air, and 10” drum brakes. It’s interior was gutted, an aluminum dash cover was put in place with toggle switches and racing gauges.
The car came complete with its original 13” rims, sans poverty caps. A hole had been cut in the hood for the air cleaner to pop through. Hastily sprayed with red oxide primer (more of a doodoo brown), the bondo patches were good enough for a race car.

I sourced a ‘96 Ram Magnum 360 and rebuilt the bottom end and put on a 4 bbl air gap intake and threw on a small HEI style distributor and topped it with a 750 Holley I rebuilt. Found a small block 727 and bought a new 2800 stall neutral balanced converter with smaller bolt pattern to use with the balanced Magnum flexplate.

The 7 1/4 stock rear has got to go, thinking shortened 8.8 Explorer or 8 3/4 Mopar a-body rear if I can find one I won’t have to take out a mortgage for.

Everything is super expensive and I jumped right into a one year only model. (64 and 65 share body styles, 66 was a one off.)

Probably won’t be on here often but here’s what I’ve done so far in pictures:

Dude, I love A body Mopars. I've owned a bunch. I'll definitely be watching the build. Back in the day there was a member that built a cool Duster on here and I think he put an 8.8 under it with those same wheels.

Too funny, I just texted my Uncle a bunch of shots of that car when he said I should paint flames on it. I used this for my avatar on abodiesonly:

Fence post caps for the win! I’m going to epoxy a nut to the cap and use a fender washer and machine screw to secure them on.

Cleaned up the vent window, door handle, and lock tumbler. Installation went very easy. Also cut down the rest of my center caps. Might tackle the window crank next.

I will be following as well. Brings back memories for me as a guy I knew in my high school days was a national record holder with a 65 that had a 273 and 4 speed. The car was named "Whale Bait" and was red but I can't remember what class it ran in. We had 2 record holders in my home town at the time the other was a 55 Chevy sedan delivery with a 301 that ran in a gas class, also a red car. 67 was a great year, just wish I could have enjoyed it more at the time. ;)

Oh boy, I guess I’m in for a treat with the 360/727 combo... 😁

Leaded in the holes on the front of the hood. (I removed 3/4 inch worth of Bondo where the front hood peak got smashed in from a fender bender.) Skimmed it with plastic filler after rough shaping and stripped 1/3 of the hood to bare metal. Would like to get high build primer on it tomorrow and have it blocked and coated with color on Sunday, weather permitting.

Stripped hood down, only one small dent up top. Welded in the holes that won’t be covered by the hood scoop. Been at it since 9 am, I’m sure neighbors are delighted I’m packing it up for today after I spray final coat of primer. Going to block sand tomorrow and spray color on Sunday hopefully.

Looks outstanding. I was gonna ask if any of the neighbors are cool. lol
They’re awesome. A month after we bought the place I overhauled my LT4 and pulled the T56 with it along with the S10’s front clip. 3 days later it was all back together with new seals and a new clutch, all reassembled and back on the road.

They were all complimentary with my Firebird build in the driveway. They all say they are looking forward to seeing the Barracuda progress. I guess they don’t mind the project car in the driveway because they know it is going to get completed.

Block sanding went well, hood is all smooth with just a few pinholes to fill and the color coat can go on. Picked up the upper control arms and disc brake assembly from a ‘74 Dart in JAX. After decon, I changed the oil and did the brakes on my ‘07 Acura TL. Busy day.
