Re: door hinge parts for 2nd gen

yea Im amazed at all the stuff that goes in the dumpster
My son worked at a Pontiac/GMC dealer and parts dept cleaned house, old stuff went in dumpster.
They also closed the body shop so let him have a few items.

Not much call for Aztec fenders,Vibe bumpers etc. Still in the GM boxes.

Re: door hinge parts for 2nd gen

The roller is part of a 3 piece assembly. The upper pin pressed into the door hinge and a lower roller and pin pressed into the upper pin.

The roller fits all S10's - 1982-04 Chevy S10 Pickup Front Lower Driver or Passenger Side General Motors OEM #20058035.

The big long pin which may or may not need replacing (only if it's bent) is #14030534. Rock auto has them.

The lower pin is the stumbling block. Can't find them anywhere. I'd go to a junk yard and knock one out, which will destroy the roller, but those you can buy.

3rd gen Camaro ones are available, but they fit 1st gens. Since the rollers are all the the same it might work. Care to be the guinea pig?

Re: door hinge parts for 2nd gen

I have the lower pin that looks like a bullet
as far as Im concerned those are not re useable
it looks like the detent roller pin ending in 534 is the one I want
Im using my own improved roller so hopefully it wont ever need done again.
Yes the roller was bad so some PO bent the **** thing and pulled the spring out.
I think its staked(crimped) in there so may need some careful surgery to remove the old one.

wow $6 each? I think I paid about $1 ea but had to buy pack of 10
But that pin is used in a lot of GMs,I should get another pack of 10.

The discount dealers get around $15 for each piece. Around $45 for the set.
$55 to 60 at your local stealership.

I know you can buy the entire pic assembly from Napa, I wonder if you could just disassemble it?

I would rather stick to GM parts on this one.
I see Dorman sells the complete thing(roller ,roller pin,and big pin. for $12.

Im betting the NAPA one is just a rebranded Dorman, but thanks for mentioning

I looked at Dorman's listings, are you sure they were the correct ones for an S10 and not a fullsize or some other model?

When I did mine one lesson I learned the hard way is it's easiest to cut the old big pin into pieces and knock it out in pieces. If you pound too hard on it you can bend the hinge. And when you pound the new pin up into the hinge, do it before installing the lower little pin and roller and protect the end of the big pin. Don't hit it directly with the hammer. Or use a brass or plastic hammer. That big pin seems to be cold rolled steel and the end is easy to mushroom. Which will make getting the small pin in very difficult if not impossible.
You'll also need a new spring for the arm if the old one is gone and a door spring compressor. They're cheap on ebay.
And grease the living crap out of everything before, during, and after installation. I used waterproof wheel bearing grease.

Re: door hinge parts for 2nd gen

ok thanks
over the years Ive made a science out of door pins, bushings, hinge rebuilds.
Many of the older GMs used the same set up,just a little variation of parts.
Ive made a few specialized tools to removal and install .
Was doing so many at one time that I made a caddy for my floor jack to hold and position doors,
so they dont have to be disconnected, just never have had the need to replace the complete roller pin assembly.

Re: door hinge parts for 2nd gen

It's rare. I had one where the spring had fallen out and the PO had slammed the door and bent the bottom of the big pin. Fortunately I was able to straighten the arm (lever, follower, whatever) with a BFH.
It's a common occurrence when the hinge pins get real loose, but most people have enough sense to fold the lever out of the way.
