Battery Options

I'm planning to do my battery relocation soon, and a recently stripped out side post got me thinking, why not ditch the side post thing all together? Which made the next question come up, what's the smallest battery I can run?

My truck has zero accessories, no radio, very bare electrically. Anybody have any experience running different batteries? Something that won't compromise the every day use of the vehicle.

Re: Battery Options

Ive had good luck with AGM batteries
might want to try a couple of the small powersport batteries wired in parallel
Ive tested these at 300CCA

Re: Battery Options

Didn't even consider motorcycle batteries, interesting. I'm guessing the Miata battery I was looking at will definitely work then.

Here in St. Louis it does get down below zero sometimes, but it's pretty rare. I'm hoping I can keep my truck garaged next winter anyway so ultra cold weather is not that much of a concern.

What cable size do you usually run? I was looking at running a single 2awg up to a D-block mounted on one of the wheel houses, and using the stock wiring for everything else except for 2awg to the starter. The battery will probably be under the passenger side of the bed, right behind the cab.

Re: Battery Options

its hard to beat these for $30 EACH
I have the 240 CCA ones and they have a 2015 date code and still test at 300CCA
you can run #4 between them and they can mount in any position.

Re: Battery Options

I believe that would be the trick to getting away with a small battery. The heavier the cable the less resistance under load. Problem is with most battery relocations is they use the frame as the negative cable and steel has more resistance than copper. But the problem with running 2 heavy copper cables from say the rear near the spare is that much cable will negate any weight savings.
Kind of a Catch 22.

Re: Battery Options

I think the Miata battery is a pretty rad idea. My Miata is a 1.8 with far more electronic crap and power accessories than my S10. They're small and light, pretty cheap too.

Re: Battery Options

Well, my current battery is an AGM but it's a hefty 43.55 lbs according to the specifications, so a Miata battery at ~26lbs will still be less weight even with longer cables and D block installed.

S10 starter is 1.4kW and so is a Miata with automatic transmission, compression ratio is not much different, and I only have alt and wp to drive so starting should not be an issue.
