Cut Coil Question

Be Honest....

How many folks here have actually cut coils then ridden in the vehicle?

I have a feeling that there are many people here who like to "jump on the bandwagon" and tell everyone about how bad the ride is with cut coils without ever experiancing it themselves...

I have been stating my side on this story since before I was even on staff over this forum. I have done it years ago to my own rides. And use to do it for people after they would bitch and moan even after I told them how bad the ride was and the risk. But you just can not tell some people. They have to learn on their own. All I can say is if you do still want to cut your coils instead of spending the little money to do it right, then make sure you do not heat them up when you do it. And by all means do not heat the coils to drop it. That is even worse. Oh yeah and do not forget to try to find a shop to fix the camber issue after you cut them that will not bitch for what you did.


BTW that is one reason I gave up posting in this forum a long time back. You can not tell the current group of young people on this forum now a damn thing since they already know it all.

I've been cutting them since the early 80's.... usually no more than a full coil and have never been dis-satisfied with the ride quality of any of the vehicles.

I just wanted an honest response as to how many folks actually ride in the vehicles. I see guy's here that comment on so many topics that I know there's no way they can have that many experiances in 18-19 years of their lives yet they swear before god and everyone else that they know better. This is one of the topics I take acception with as I've known many people who drive vehicles with cut coils for years and never complain..

^^^ x2, but i have never cut them myself, just rode in them with cut coils. i would have picked an answer but i was looking for a "never cut coils but have ridden on them and they ride good when done correctly" answer...

ive cut the coils in my beater cars cuz i didnt feel like spending money on them. they didnt ride too bad.... until you hit a big bump and smack the bumpstops

ive cut them twice for customers..... coincidentally both were mustangs.... one hatch, and one 06 convertible. its surprising how well they actually rode. myself, id rather have the spring rate of performance ones

I ran my truck with one coil cut off the front for almost a year. The ride was ok but i did hit the bumpstops on occasion. I recently bought drop coils and i personally think the ride was MUCH better with the cut coils.

I cut half a coil off my belltechs after wicked mayhem did it, no problems at all, rides identical, keep the coil cool and youll have no probs

i would never recommend cutting coils, but if you actually know what you are doing, its fine

I rode with one coil removed for a few months and could not even tell the difference in the ride.

I have ridden in 3 trucks with cut coils, one basically has 1/2" suspension travel up front because they were cut soo much (with stock bump stops removed). of course it rode like crap but that was an extreme amount of coil that has been cut. its like someone wanted a 4" drop out of the stock coils so they just started cutting. (buddy of mine bought it that way)

The other truck just had 1 coil cut and you really couldnt tell the difference. (if it were my truck i might have been able to tell idk)

and the third one had his cut and would always hit the bumpstops, also his shocks were shot but you can definitely tell it was a little rough. I guess if his shocks were good it wouldnt be that big of a deal.

really if its just one coil its really not bad, but more than that and you may be sacrificing ride quality. Like ryo said its not a "bad" thing if you know what your doing. Personally i would just get the appropriate drop coil, its only $90 or so and you can always sell your stock ones if your really strapped for cash.

Cutting the coils is fine. Mine are cut and ride's like it did before. Granted ppl that cut coils and ride in them probably forget to install drop shocks. As that has to do with the ride it self. If you take your time with a saw zaw or cut off wheel it shouldn't be a problem. Don't use a torch or hurry the process. Doing that makes the springs weak and loose the stiffness or spring rate effecting the ride quality. Now ppl can buy drop shocks with a higher spring rates.

yup. ive cut a bunch of coils. my DD 87 is currently rocking 1 full coil cut out, and no bumpstops, at least until my summit order gets here. im also using stock bilsteings from a 2000 2wd blazer, and am not bottomig the shock. my LCA hits frame before the shock bottoms.

the ride and spring rate are right where i want it.

reccomended cutting method is a 4 inch grinder, dewalt cut off wheel, cut quick, and use a water hose to cool the non scrap side of the cut.

i cut them in my grand am too..sat about 4 inches off the ground and i put roughly 20k on them. and i have cut numerouse others. mustangs,s10's,FS's ect..even a geo metro lol.

cutting coils is gay. but if you really wanted to do it then buy some race car coils. we put them in the coil tester at the race shop and no matter how far you compress it, it continues to hold its true spring rate.

Yeah, I said as long as it's not a torch (IE sawzall, grinder, etc.)

Is there a difference in cutting the coils with a sawzall compared to a grinder was more my question.

Grinder gets hotter which could effect the spring rate. But a dull saw zaw will do the same.

so hypothetically if you cut your coil springs down like 4" and it messes your alignment up as you drive it for awhile, then if you put drop springs in will the alignment still be just as bad or will it right it self out (sorta)? or is the alignment permanently ****ed?

I've cut coils with a torch and with a sawzall. I didn't notice a major ride quality difference between the two. Or between cut coils and drop coils even.

When you really start getting into trouble is when you just take a torch to the coils and heat them up to lower whatever it is you're lowering.

I bought my camaro with cut coils in the front, and lowering coils in the rear. it did not ride bad, it was a stiffer ride, but that can be expected with a lowered car.

I have cut coils in my truck now and Im pretty happy with the ride quality it has, its not to bouncy but not to stiff and I only took one coil off and used a grinder to cut them and Im running 2" spindles

well... i guess everyone has there experiences... my buddy cut his springs didn't check see how hot they got and it dropped it on the bump stops. he only cut 1 1/4 lobes... now when i cut mine, i had a buddy hold a steady stream of water running at the spot where i was cutting... yea the water was spraying all over the place. i cut 1 lobe out and i still got 1" between the lower c.a and the bump stop. but i like how it looks. and it is def handling a lot better. and its not bouncy. haven't hit the bump stops yet...

but to anyone if you got money invest in drop spindles. give you the drop and still have a good range of motion...

I have cut coils for many years. On my 1st gen blazer I had cut 1-1/4 coils off and had 3" blocks and the ride was still nice drove cross country no problems.
I then purchased another blazer that had spindles,springs and 3" blocks with 1 leaf removed from the pack and it was almost identical as far as ride quality.then I removed the 3" blocks and searched the leaf pack and the ride was a BUNCH BETTER out back and the axle wrap was gone. As a result I do NOT use blocks anymore! Now I have a 2nd
gen blazer its still at the nose bleed height so in the next week I plan to cut 1-1/4 coils from the front,dearch the rear pack add a small 2┬░shim and let it ride......
There are many horror stories with both cutting and heating but it depends on who does the work!!I have had them both along with the expensive route........

I cut em on my last two Dimes,both 1st gen '91 models. On the next to last,I lopped so much off I only had around 1-1.5" of travel left,LOL,and if that weren't bad enough,I lowered the rear so badly (read: free) it had less than that...like an old Harley hardtail

Would I do that again? NOT to that extreme,but if I wanted 1-1.5" more drop and was broke (almost always am...being disabled doesn't pay what my former jobs did,and I ain't even drawing that yet either after fighting fo rit 2 years ),probably,but nothing more than 1/2-3/4 of a coil.

Whoops...went to look at a new Dime/Sonoma,brought home a used Jeep XJ

Watched a friend cut his coils (after I told him not to), rode in his truck, rode in a few other trucks with cut coils. Fun fun...

haha well ive cut it open, to buy grinder wheels lol does anyone know how much a coil is of half a coil is cause i cut half a coil and it didnt do nothing.

To cut anything less than 1 ring off is a waste
If you cut more than 1 ring off it will ride like a brick being tossed down a bumpy road!
don't forget to remove the bump stops and add the small ones made by ENEGRY SUSPENSION.
I removed ONLY 1 coil from my current blazer but have 18" wheels up front I do like where it sits but believe I need spindles to get it where I want it.
Stock ride height w/ 245/40/18



1 coil removed same wheel and tire

'96 s10, C6s, 8.8, Envoy bumper, Jimmy grille, Ls1/C5 brakes,4L80E, 5.3, N2O......
'81 Malibu, could not resist the deal. Ls to come
'93 TA, plenty haul ass parts
