New Blazer!

Howdy Folks,

A little while back I posted the thread 'One Last Note to my Blazer'

Well... shortly after that I found a truck about 50 miles north.

After more than two years of missing my old 1998 Blazer, I found a truck with a body that was in reasonably good shape.

It's been a long project - I got it in August and just not got it road worthy. I didn't want to post anything here until it was on the road.

So far I'm in it for a new engine, a couple suspension parts, then just all the basics.

New Blazer!-newblazer.jpg

Not an active build, and not here with any questions, so I figured OT was a good forum to drop it in.

Thanks guys!

Thank you!

This one is also a 1998, but it is an LT. So leather seats (worn), auto climate control (must argue with HAL about what temperature I want) and keyless entry (I'll eventually get that working)

Front hub caps aren't missing - I'm just too lazy to put them back on because I have the wheels off so often lol

A/C didn't work when I got it - one clutch cycle switch later and it blows cold.

One thing I'd like to share with the community -
This Blazer had a similar problem to my old Blazer: the idle would go to heck when it would get hot.
After a lot of head scratching, it turned out to be the crank position sensor getting hot and then sending inaccurate information. New ACDelco crank position sensor and it runs like it's new.
Moral of the story - replace old sensors.

Problems I still have to rectify -
- Wiper delay is... dodgy
- HVAC mode door actuator is roached (replacement part is discontinued, need to make something)
- Some switches are dodgy
- Steering feels fatigued
- Needs 'Bravada Shaft Upgrade'
- Instrument panel dimmer does strange things (when you turn it to 'dome on' it rapidly flashes the dome light every time you touch it)
- Front door lock actuators need to be replaced

Driving a Blazer again after not having one was like manna from heaven. It's relaxing to drive - unlike the Beretta which while reliable and durable, feels like you're constantly in a NASCAR race.

Re: New Blazer!

I actually like late 80ís-early Ď90ís FWD GMís.

I started off as a Dealership Tech, and used to target those vehicles as vehicles to fix&flip in my late teens to early 20ís...had a celebrity, couple berettas, several cavaliers,a couple luminas...a couple grand ams,a couple Grand Prix, several centuries,..couple leSabres, and a have full of 88ís,and 98ís.....anything fwd GM. their parts where interchangeable, people where still scared of them coming off of a world of RWD,so I was getting them for like $200,fixing them, and selling them in a couple days, and making $500-$1,500 a car. That was really cold money in those days. My day job alone back then paid well for itís time, literally more then my parents made together! then those FWD GMís,...good times..trips to all over the place banging escorts that looked like super models, smoking hydro like cigarettes that people only saw in High Times magazines back then..damn good times..

Ask and you shall receive (Warning, this car isn't pretty by any means):

Driver side at a parking area in Pike Nat'l Forest
Front view near my old apartment
Digital Dashboard - Low Coolant Light is not accurate. Previous owner put a non-sensor reservoir in it and removed the jumper harness :P
Video Clip of Engine Running (Loud)
Beretta Manual On Cassette I found in the glove box. Stereo got replaced after it died horribly, so I can't play it.

The story of this car is bittersweet. As you can see, it's seen nothing but abuse. The plugs in it when I got it were burned open to almost .090" and 2 of the coils were arcing to the block. FPR was leaking more fuel than it put into the engine... you had to floor it to get it to start.

That and about a million other things were wrong. Interior switches didn't work, the headlights were busted up from an accident.

Part by part over the course of months I put it back together as best as I could - using AC Delco replacement parts where they were available and doing a little back yard engineering for things that weren't available anymore.

Slowly but surely the performance cleaned up, the lost horses all came back and this has become one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. I've put around 20K miles on it in 2.5 years. This has completely changed my opinion on FWD cars - especially the GM platform.

I was in a really tough situation when I bought this car. I was between jobs and things weren't looking good. It was in a state of near total failure and managed to hold on long enough until I could afford to start fixing things. According to the Carfax I'm the sixth owner. Interior is non-existent and the body is falling apart now. I wish I could find someone who wanted to paint it and fix up the body/interior - that said, I'm pretty sure I am this car's final owner.

Whoever built this car back in 1988/89 - I'd like to thank you for your time. This car was critical to me being successful, it's been a lot of fun to drive, and I made a lot of memories in it.

Re: New Blazer!

Haha! That’s kick ass!

I bought two of them that color. One had the red seats, one had the grey more sporty looking seats....one was crashed, one had a blown engine that looked like

Crazy thing was they both had those ugly ass wheels,BUT one was a 14” one was 15” iirc...I thought they originally where the same wheel, lol.

Swapped the powertrain from the wrecked one into the other in my parents driveway, and combined the fuel in their tanks. Drove the car for two weeks, and sold it when the tank was empty

also had a dark metallic grey one like this

that had a bad transmission...put a used transmission in it that came from the earlier berettas leftovers...sold it to a guy up the road from me. He had it for a couple years, and became a good customer, lol.

I had a buddy in my highschool auto tech that had a black GT model that was a V6 manual, and had those buzzsaw wheels GM later put on the FWD Pontiac vans. That looked exactly like this

at the same time worked at Midas after school, and a counter chick had a teal green beretta Indy with this crazy front valance like this..

they where definitely popular cars back in the day. Man,if you lived within an hour or two drive I would seriously want to come there and drive your car. I bet that would be a blast! I seriously haven’t seen one in person is at least 8-10 years..it’s been a long time. I do see a Corsica every so often. There’s one parked sometimes at a gas station I pass, and I saw a super clean one in Gulf Breeze Florida a couple months back.

Re: New Blazer!

I always liked Berettas. The Z26's and the Indys were cool but the GTU's and GTZ's with the hot quad4's were pretty badass in their day.

Re: New Blazer!

2 yrs ago I went with a buddy of mine to pick up a GTP that was the motor from H3ll twin dual cam and a 5 speed.
I think they made less than 50 of them. First owner had babied the car and his widow sold it to us,only with the understanding that it would get put in car shows and pampered as it had before.Car was a special edition black/gold with every option including HUD.Car is pretty quick, and screams up to 7K but its not near as powerful as our GTP/GTX.

Re: New Blazer!

I have an Olds Achieva SCX W41.The last of the W cars and arguably the baddest of all those 90's fwd GMs. That thing revs to almost 8 grand and melts the tires in the first 3 gears. I wish I had the time it deserves.

I liked that 3.1 V6. Had a tinny sound to the exhaust tho..so did the 2.8 models. I feel those engines got a bad rap, because people beat&neglected them. Iíve seen plenty with ungodly mileage that still run fine...just gotta keep up on that coolant system, and those oil leaks.

Re: New Blazer!

Just wish they sold them with manual transmissions longer. They are hard to find in the local boneyard and thanks to the Fiero people, worth more than I want to pay when they come up in classifieds. Though I've heard the F23 and F40 also work...

I got a spare 0 mile quad4 Muncie/Getrag close ratio 282 for sale! lol

The quad4's of that era have that weird raspy tinny sound too. I think GM likeded it back then.

Yea, too bad Quad4 had it's own special bellhousing pattern. Not sure why they couldn't use the small corporate pattern for that.
