Colorado oil pressure light.

I picked up a 2006 Colorado from a friend of mine around Thanksgiving. The truck has 210,000 miles on it. He bought it in 2010 with 44k. It has been well maintained. Driving to work a couple of weeks ago, SES light came on P0014 (actuator was replaced about 700 miles ago with AC-Delco.) Drove another 5 miles or so, and the oil pressure light came on (driving 35mph) Stopped, checked oil, it was ok. started it back up, no light. Came back on in about a half mile. Shut it down and trailered it to the shop. Ordered an adapter to check oil pressure. Good oil pressure 50psi cold 20psi hot idle. Spec is 12psi @1200 rpm. Ordered an oil pressure switch. Replaced switch, drove a couple of miles, light back on. rechecked oil pressure. dips to about zero at times. I suspect the oil pickup screen is plugged. Pulling the pan on this truck is a major pain in the d*%k. Thought I would try to drain the oil, soak the screen in some cleaner without starting engine, draining it back out, putting oil back in , then after it idles a little while, fresh oil and filter.

Cliff notes
Losing oil pressure at times hot. Suspect plugged oil pickup screen. Want to try to soak clean without engine running. Planning on using Wynn's VIC (valve injector cleaner) and leaving it in the crankcase for a couple of days.
Thoughts?

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

drain oil,let it sit with drain plug out, remove filter so theres no oil dripping.
get an inspection camera that will fit inside the drain hole.
have a look inside to see if the screen is clogged.

Sounds more like its sucking air from a bad gasket or O ring.
FYI those add on endoscopy cameras are about $15 for a 3meter and worth every penny

I don't have a camera, but I will probably get one. Is there one you would recommend ?
I drained the oil Friday night and put a couple of quarts of Wynn's VIC in the crankcase. Saturday afternoon I went over to the shop and drained the cleaner out. The stuff looked like Coca Cola. Put some fresh in. I am going over today. If it is fairly clean, I am going to put oil in it and hook up the pressure gauge.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Ive bought 2 of the cameras, first was a 1 meter and worked fine for looking inside cylinders etc.
Second one is a 5 meter I bought for inspecting my well when it went bad. Excellent pics of the inside
of 40YO well casing that had a rust hole in it about 12ft down.
that one came in a generic box with # TD0107-5M

I just read the instructions and it said S3-S6 so Im going to try an old S6 i have and see if it will work on that.It also says any android that has OTG.
Windows tablet worked great too.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

I used to rebuild engines as a side line business.
Guy brings me a 78 Camaro with 305,says he wants a 350 in it.
It was his girlfriends, who bought new. This was around 81 or 82,dont remember
exact date , the car was still very new but had a very noisy motor.
I pull motor out and begin to take apart.
First pulled the intake,as I needed it to put back on the 350.
When I pulled it,couldnt believe my eyes,it was like it had a gasket across the valley, couldnt see any lifters or the cam.
Oil was so coked up that it sealed the upper half of the motor.
I asked the guy what was up with this new of a car looking like it was 50 years old.
Girl had never changed the oil, just added occasionally.
I literally had to chisel the coke off the lower part of manifold, some of it was so hard it sparked when hit.
Oil pan was so bad I dropped it down to look and put it back on,threw the block away.
What was in the oil pan looked like tar,and resembled anti seize. One drop and it wouldnt come off, just smeared around.
I charged the guy $75 for a core and he just laughed, said she got off really cheap from all that oil change money saved.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Update;
I drained the cleaner out Sunday afternoon. The latest batch pretty much looked like the first. Went ahead and changed oil filter, and added 1 quart MMO to 5 quarts of conventional 5W30. Oil pressure went to zero after about 30 minutes. Thought I would pull the valve cover to inspect, but unless it is all plugged up and oil is not draining back, Then I am looking at an oil pump.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Update; I got the valve cover off and cleaned out the crankcase breather. changed oil filter afterward, and found a collapsed oil filter. Oil pressure good, VVT working properly. Need to get the oil pressure gauge wired permanently before I take it for an alignment.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

That should read oil and filter. Too late to edit. Was an AC-Delco filter.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

What number? The filters with "E" at the end are junk. I'd go with a "UPF" number if available.

It was a PF61E
The inner "cage" was made of plastic.
Will probably use Carquest branded Wix filters in the future.
I just came across the receipt from the new tires I put on the truck in January. They have 42 miles on them lol

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Found something interesting. Advance Commercial still sells the PF61, but do not stock the PF61E
The better CarQuest filters are no longer Wix, but are made by Baldwin. I had purchased one of the PF61E filters from Rural King, The other two from Amazon. Did not know you could still get PF61.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Update; Drove it about 20 miles or so on Monday. Oil pressure ok, but still having VVT issues. inlet screen was plugged again. Need to see if the PF61E has failed, or there is still junk in the oil passages.

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

I believe that the Napa gold is still made by WIX.
In the old days when I had one that bad I would replace a couple qts of oil with ATF and idle for a while
then drain and change.

This is the third time I have changed the oil in this thing. When I got it, the thermostat was bad. Engine would not get up to operating temp. The baffles in the cam cover were pretty plugged up, so this 5 banger was nasty. I currently have conventional 10w30 in it, with a quart of MMO. I have ran a guart of atf in it, MMO, and a bottle of FVP (like Seafoam) Not all at the same time lol. The Wynn's did a really good job on cleaning up the oil pan and pickup. (looked at it with a scope camera)

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

ahh so you got a butt scope camera...
no good mechanic should be without one of those and a good temp gun.
not changing oil is something that sometimes cant be fixed(see my comment above about the Camaro.)

Re: Colorado oil pressure light.

Update; Changed oil last Saturday. Pulled vvt solenoid, Blew out the oil passages when the oil filter was off. Drove it last weekend 20 some miles. Drove it almost 50 miles today. Oil pressure good, Cam Phazer working properly. No dtcs. Used synthetic 10w30 (5 qts) and 1 qt MMO.

Update; Had to clean the screen a week ago. Been good since then. Put over 70 miles on it Monday. Thursday was My daughter's chemo day, so only put a couple of hundred miles on it last week. Been my daily driver since it is the only one that has working a/c at the moment.
