Lightbulb The Gears of War truck

From time to time I paint my truck, the last couple of times it was a Halo based theme.

This new version is a bit more than just a rattle can paintjob, I’m going with Gears of War this time.

The only thing I've gone into this knowing is that I want to change out the bed of the truck because of extreme rust and use damage, that I want to put HUGE obnoxious headlamps in it, and I want to paint it with a Gears of War theme.

Let the adventure begin.

First was bed selection.

My wife picked out a Ford bed to go on a Chevy truck.

Specifically a bed from a Green 1999 Ford Ranger XLT

After a time, I extracted the truck bed goodness and got it home

After offloading the bed by myself I had to clean up all of the glass in the back... I never thought I would vacuum a lawn!

Trying to remove the truck bed turned out to be a lot trickier than I imagined.

I don't accept this answer, and propose my own.

After taking it to the frame

The frame needs sub structure to support the new bed

Next it needs a deck, because I have future plans for this truck that go beyond the scope of a pickup, so while I have it apart, I'm doing the work now.

I tried to marry the bed to the truck by myself and as a result I damaged the right rear quarter

If you get angry enough, and you're willing to sacrifice materials, you can get the bed of the truck on the back (it's sitting on blocks on the deck in this shot)

Next was a modification of the fuel neck, remember this was a Ford going on a Chevy

So lines had to be made

I still need a tailgate and tail lights... luckily eBay was a great resource for tail lights.

Attaching the bed snapped bit after bit, and at $20 a pop... it was getting to be a pain around the 5th bit

I had to create a wire harness to adapt Chevy lights to Ford plugs

hacking up the front of the truck was the next obstacle

After hacking up an aftermarket billet grill, I then had to get it to work with some really cool obnoxious headlamps

There was some cutting of the back base to get the grill to mount, with lots of custom mounts.

I had to make the grill in two sides

It took a bit to get them to merge, and even more to wire everything up

The final cuts with the new harness in place

testing

Both in place

Fully together

Now if you're asking yourself "what does this modification have to do with Gears of War?"... then you don't play much

See it now?

Re: The Gears of War truck

With the grill and lights in place it's time to clean up my sloppy lines

I bought a strip of aluminum, cut it, and then with a pair of pliars bent it up to match the profile of the grill.

I just eyeballed it, and for some reason beyond my control... it turned out perfect the very first time.

That was not part of the plan.... usually it's 2-3 attempts.... tons of materials wasted, at least a bit of blood from some new wound in the creation followed by some choice words and dancing around to get it right.
I'm not sure happened here, but apparently I punched my "got it right the first time" card, and it will never happen again.
In the meantime... bumper in place here is the new front of the truck

I've had a lot of complaints that I put all that work into putting the bed on the back... and went all MySpace photo angle with it and never actually showed the thing... so here you go, this is the truck intact

Now for however long its going to take to get the body prepped for paint.
I suspect a week.
We're getting to the paint phase of the mod, and while I would love beyond gumdrop dreams and unicorn wishes to repair the body & remove damage like this

then have a professional looking paintjob... the truth is, I simply don't have the resources, and if I did I would use them to improve the quality of our life by paying off bills.
It's a harsh reality, but I accept my station in life and I'm content to try not to live beyond my means.
That being said I did mud up the right quarter that I damaged trying to He-Man the bed on by myself.

Now I don't claim to be all that and a side of fries with Bondo... as a matter of fact I wouldn't even qualify my skills as passable.
I can however lay claim that I can sculpt in Bondo like nobody's business, and I'm hoping to tap into that skill set and pull this repair off.

for now being a work night all I can do is mud this sucker up, and cover it with primer in it's boogered up/unsanded state.

The picture is flattering... I promise you it looks like crap in real life
The other side however took the prime just fine... bear in mind this is a first coat.

Time is not my buddy today so all I could really do is hit the drivers side up to the Locust Eyes grill

As you can see that chewy body rott is still there, and later on when the paintjob looks amazing, this is where the rust is going to flake it off at as it has done time and time again

I still have a ton to do as you can see.

I started cleaning away on the passenger side when a large chunk of the body just fell off!

I know I know, quality.
At this point the body really is a lost cause and I have no clue how to get it back to normal without throwing an obscene amount of money (which I don't have) at it.
I appreciate what I've got, I just wish I could do more.
That being said I figured the bed needed a little "charm" to match the front... yes I know it's weird to want to distress the back to match flaws on the front but it just didn't look right.
So that corner I bondoed the hell out of... I textured to look like body rott.

Yes... I really felt like that was worth a couple of hours when it would have been faster to sand it smooth to match the body. We all have our quirks, I like uniformity even in my chaos.
So time to hit the beast with a sloppy coat of Ruddy brown

Now I bought a little silver paint

and started going happy go nuts on the body as a base... I mean I picked a base coat of silver that is just as gawd-awful as the headlights, I mean I hit gold on crappy silver

Oh yes, I'm digging the streaks, this thing screams "Ghetto Fabulous!"
I've had a design locked in my head since day one... before day one actually... either way I has plans.
I started with the taping

remember this is a reversal, so the silver is not the actual paintjob... there has to be some black in there

The reveal

I liked the idea of a little cog gear, but I wanted it to give the taper down... so I used my logo, but I think I'm going to remove it and use that space for a bit more design and less plugging the site.

This isnt done, and that logo wont be so pronounced later
Add in a Crimson... but not too crazy

Lets get the grill and bumper in there

There is still more to do with the paintjob

It's my winter beater, it gets driven quite a bit, it's used for hauling both in the back, in the trailer I made for it, and it used to be setup for hauling cars... specifically a Tracker I bought for my wife that broke down enough to necessitate a custom tow package

The body on the truck is shot to hell... I mean falling off in large chunks, so I wanted to "wash" it

The first two paintjobs were Halo keeping in theme with the wash, I thought it would be fun to hack up the truck and get all happy go nuts with it.

This is actually pretty tame compared to what I've done to vehicles in the past.

Re: The Gears of War truck

1 cut the box off have it as a flat bed
2 put the box back on upside down
3 take the ford truck box to the scrap metal
4 leave the truck there and take the money and buy a new video game

Re: The Gears of War truck

the bed and the 2 piece grille are what bug me the most.... the bed needs to be lowered. its interesting tho..... as long as you are having fun with it its all good, just make damn sure if your ever in my neck of the woods you dont start spray painting anything near my truck....

Re: The Gears of War truck

The truck is every bit a winter beater.

It’s main function is to be-bop around in the winter snow, load down with materials from Homedepot, help friends move (the “friend with truck” scenario), and to just have fun with.

This truck actually is my pride and joy (more joy than anything else)… I wanted a cheap vehicle that goes from A to B, and something I could tinker with, that’s what I have.

I can’t afford to go out and spend a ton of money in materials, I don’t own a garage, and I am very grateful for what I do have.

I make no apologies for it.

For those of you who have actual shops and/or garages where you can work on your vehicles, good for you! One day I hope to be in your ranks (I really do).

For the rest of us who live paycheck to paycheck and would still like to tinker with the rust buckets we love…

Today I started with more taping... I know it's a lot of effort for a paint job that is going to fall apart before the first snow... but it's all about the fun.

Now here's where it gets a bit weird.
I repainted it silver, but then I added in shading... then the part that wont make sense at this point will be the color shade.

The lines of color in the silver and black are very deliberate.
As some have already figured out, the truck was never intended to be silver
So to let this cure overnight before the next step... here's where we stand

Here's a better look at the shading

And the COG line

I hope that the weather holds up this week, I’m looking forward to shooting the actual color to it tomorrow if at all possible.

Wow thank god someone knows!!

Oh and now that i know for sure it is a 100% beater than thats fine, i will admit, i would never think someone could mask off and make a paint job with that kind of fading in a backyard with rattle cans, so good on that

just lower the bed!!
