Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

After a long hiatus from tinkering with S-series,and just now getting back into them itís starting to become more then a passing thing again I figure a new thread was in order to stop spamming the forum.

Iíll start off with what Iím working on now,and add trucks as I work on them. I bounce around a lot nowadays on projects,so Iíll try to mark which trucks are which with the pics, because it can get hard to tell dismantle, especially since I currently have 3 Tan Xcabs Iím working on. Itís also becoming more difficult to find good used parts or cheap parts trucks..with various Facebook markets just locating them for sale isnít as easy as the Craigslist or newspaper add times...always looking for those puzzle pieces tho

Tan Ď00 Chevrolet 3door Xcab Stepside. 4.3,Auto,Power options.

I originally purchased this truck for parts. Mechanically itís a really good running truck! No MLís lit on the dash, shifts out nice,..body&interior wise itís a piece of shit! I really donít like to let my trucks sit indefinitely, and become more&more dilapidated over time. The truck is drivable,so some stabilization is in order to keep it from falling apart till I decide its future.

Interior:

abused&neglected with busted out speaker grilles, dash panel, cut wiring, and ruminants of a rigged sound system.

Rain water leaking in on passenger side floor.

Sagging driverís door that wonít close.

Driverís window off track, and damaged sash

Bad crack in windshield

I replaced the Driverís door with a junkyard blazer door of the same color. Couple slight blemishes, but pretty straight, with surprisingly nice hinge holes!

Now I can close the door!!!

The next big issue is the water on the floor, wet carpet,smell,...breathing mold Iím not going to remove a crumbling dash to fix the leak, then reinstall it...so enter

í03 Chevrolet 3door Xcab fleetside,2.2,manual,Cruise,up level interior

The body is a total loss. Interior trashed, not a straight body panel on it. Crankcase full of mix...BUT the price was right at $250,and behind the 99-01 Dash bezel us a near perfect double din dash!! A very rare item for Florida!!

It also has all its accessories including a newer AC system&Alternator! Plus,a smooth feeling manual trans..which will come into play in yet another truck I have Iíve been sterling parts off of for two years Iíll get to that one later.

Back to the Tan Ď00 Xcab I pulled its dash to see all whatís going to be needed to get this thing to not be a complete shitbix. plus the heater didnít work! Appears the core is completely stopped up!! Couldnít even get through it with compressed air.

With the dash removed I ran a hose over the truck, and sat inside. The water was coming in through two places. The fresh air duct, and the heater box

Now Iím waiting to go back to Florida to pillage parts from my donor truck then when Iím back in Bama Iíll tackle the windshield thatís coming outta this

White í97 Isuzu Hombre parts truck originally obtained from Davey2cat.

Then I can finally scrap whatís left of the Hombre..itís been long stripped! I also have some nice tan body parts in my garage for this Ď00 Iím working once I get it sealed up,and heat.

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

These trucks look pretty dilapidated in most regards... "well driven" I suppose. What kind of parts are you really finding on these base-modelish trucks that makes the effort and storage of multiple junkers worth while?

I'd be curious to see your actual "project truck" that you're salvaging this stuff for. A double din dash is by no means rare. 80-100$ for a mint condition not-cracked one typically...

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

yeah,I chuckled a little reading that too.

Idk how long Iím gonna hang out. I was getting bored in Florida. Iíve already gotten the hint Iím not welcome on Facebook commenting on pretty much anything, lol. I get banned for hurting someoneís feelings only to come back, and get banned for something I posted a year ago that hurt someone elseís feelings.

If the weather behaves Iíll be dismantling that tan 03 this week, cut up,and off to recycling, get those wheels&tires on Craigslist. Get this Tan Ď00 tagged up to daily so I can tear into my old white truck I pressed those mounts for as well as some over due maint.

Iím still hunting a crew to drop on the Ď00ís frame&drivetrain. In the meantime Iíll get some of these ďmultiple junkersĒ outta the way

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Blows big time! I wasn’t on any S-series groups on Facebook tho. I tried!!! Trust me,Facebook can keep 90% of those people! they’ll be outta business soon. they’re going too far with censorship. Honestly, not even blocking people should be allowed imo. If you don’t start shit there usually isn’t any. If you have a shady past you should avoid social media anyways, same thing if you wanna keep the fantasy alive, and pretend your ol’ lady wasn’t a hoe before you got stuck with her

Shhhhh,....this is the junker only thread

yeah,I too notice it now that you mentioned it. Very astute observationalist!! I still wash her,and keep her clean. Not really the correct vehicle for the island life,so I leave her in Bama. When it rains a lot of flooding happens really fast!..I’ve had some sketchy moments with the ‘01...like water so deep it’s slapping on my floor pan type shit! Pretty sure she wouldn’t have made it due to her ride height.

I’m debating on dismantling her tbh. The right black 4.3 00+ 3door Xcab would persuade me to do so. although I love that 97 Dash, and have a perfect dash stashed indoors to put in her,not having that 3rd door hurts her practicality. I’m not a fan of the 2.2,especially the old ones, and have been actively phasing them out of my fleet....except for base medelish junkers of course I’ll never sell her with all those good parts on her tho!! I’d probably buy a younger truck with the 3rd door, and swap all my crispy black panels&fake low effects on that...,then sell her.

Some more progress has happened on my uber common double din dash too!! to keep this post educational for those who are unaware all 2wd trucks from 00-early 02(non RDS radio/Double Din)no matter what the powertrain or options have the same dash harnesses. The Dash harness numbers are on tags located behind the glove box,so if anyone ever needs to replace one due to past Obama engineering? remove your lower panel under your glovebox, and write down that 4 digit number..

00-early 02 2wd dash harness number:

And late 02&03 RDS dash harness number:

the dash harnesses from the Tan ‘00&Tan ‘03 where both damaged, but the original dash from my red ‘00 Sonoma from it’s auto vin4 -manual vin5 swap/double din upgrade still contained its pristine 2782 harness!!

So,that’s already installed, dash&vents cleaned up,and ready to rock after I grab some little things off of my Tan ‘03 parts truck.

Another couple little tidbits I can share based on observations over the years is there’s at least 6 different body harnesses that I’ve seen from 00-02 depending on transmission&power options: auto loaded, auto LS (cruise&crank windows),auto base(no cruise),manual loaded, manual LS(cruise&crank windows),manual base(no cruise).

If your truck does not have power windows&locks the wires are not in your body harness(the harness wedged between your firewall&floor pan). If your truck has rubber floors,no tilt, and no cruise? chances are you don’t have that wiring either!! easy way to make sure is by looking at the firewall on the driver’s side near the booster for a big ass plug that goes to the cruise actuator. That’s actually part of your body harness that comes through the firewall...if there’s no big ass plug just chillin by itself in the corner you don’t have what it needs to add it simple plug&play...also,more bad news,.. you don’t have the wiring from the BCM to the under hood fuse box for factory fogs either

If you have cruise,or that plug is in the corner or the firewall next to the booster you also have foglight wiring. In that case to acquire those options you need the missing cruise actuator, multifunction switch, fog switch, headlight harness, and an easy reprogram of your BCM.

Now there’s the flip side of GM’s strange logic! If you have power locks&power windows? you have all the wiring for keyless entry, heated mirrors, fog lights(except headlight harness), and power seats(except seat harness)!!

If you have all those strange blue plug taped up under the driver’s side of your dash goes to your keyless entry module

And that black plug at the firewall not plugged into shit near the column is for the power seats, and yes..they’re also a source of constant B+ For the customization guys out there.

The 95-97 trucks where so much easier with their jumper harnesses!! fýck you GM!

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

I haven’t been on Facebook in a month. I joined a few groups long ago,but left them fairly quickly for the same reason you just pointed out. Difference between me&them is I know my trucks are pieces of shŪt

Got the windshield out of the White ‘97 Hombre!

Was actually easier then I thought it would be! Removing the back windows is a lot more sketchy.

Also pulled a majority of the interior from the ‘00 Tan S10 Xcab.

Hopefully next weekend’s weather acts right. I’d like to get this windshield glued in,and the ‘03 Dash installed...I have 2 interior choices on hand in graphite I’ll get into another post, probably next week.

To keep in the spirit of my old thread..hereís ghost pissing on the garbage from the Tan truck.

I break the seats down..toss the padding&covers in the dumpster, scrap the metal frames...my White Ď01 is already loaded up with everything including the original Tan Ď00 dash frame to dump tomorrow.

Iíd like to get at least the trans from the Tan Ď03 this week to start staging the rebuild of the Red Ď00 Sonoma. Iíve got limited time to dismantle it before it starts drawing attention where itís at.

Thanks for the info on the dash harnesses, that's some good info to keep handy for matching strange options that shouldn't be together.

I just turned my faceplace back on today after 3 or 4 years of being off of it...now im second guessing that decision

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Dash harness MIGHT also all be the same on 2wd ‘99 models? I don’t have any ‘99 model trucks anymore,so Idk for sure. I know the ‘98 are different, because they have a fuel level buffer module in the harness just like the 95-97 taped up in the harness behind the glove box. They look like old school lamp drivers that used to be behind the radio on old F-bodies from the 80’s. A printed circuit board in a plastic sleeve...

The 4wd trucks have wiring for the 4wd button,so I know they’re different, and crewcabs have Blazer Dash harnesses..even the wiring for the rear wiper&hatch is clicked into the delete plate.

95-97 are the best to mess with wiring. The ones I’ve dismantled all have the same main body&dash harnesses with jumper harnesses that add options..power windows,4wd,..all that is just a jumper harnesses away. My ‘97 has a 2 Door blazer accessory harness plugged into the Xcab body harness.

See,..I’m rambling

Anyways, some goodies I got for some of my trucks I forgot to post!!

NOS box body blazer center caps for the one of my trucks I found on eBay. I have a new set of ZQ8’s to go with them..Idk which truck I’m putting them on tho.

Genuine GM door pins&bushings for all my trucks

Ebay control arms&engine mount inserts for my for my 01 Olympic White Xcab

Already pressed them into brackets I had laying around too..just waiting to get this ‘00 Tan truck good enough to take to Florida, and daily while I rebuild my ‘01

Going to the wrecking yard this weekend to hunt parts

Hey, on those cheap-0 control arms. Do they feel as beefy as factory arms or are the stamped out of lighter guage shit? What do you use to clean the acrylic off the windshield?

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

They feel good. They’re duplicates of the originals from what I can tell. I have used OE ones off trucks, and they feel the same, look the same,..even down to the welds. it was actually cheaper to buy these then to rebuild originals too!! When I install them I plan to do a little review on them...fitment,quality,and whatnot.

I’m just going to use a razor to clean up the glass followed by glass cleaner. Unless you have a better suggestion? it’s what i did in the past on back windows I’ve done to get rid of those shitty sliders that obstruct your rear view...hate those fýckin things!

I’m waiting on the adhesive now. I also bought it on eBay I got two 10.5oz tubes of Dow U-428 urethane for right under $17 shipped...I know,I’m cheap, lol

Tighten up every chance you get!!

FŁckiní Throwback Thursday Yíall!!

First I started with a Ď00 Sonoma Xcab Auto with a running 2.2 VIN 4 pull w/a cracked head I swapped to a VIN 5 5speed truck..hereís the VIN 4 being birthed!

I got that truck all fixed up,and converted, and had the original engine sitting in my shop, and came across this nice Ď99 body for $300!

Literally 2 days later I come across this fŁcked up Ď99 base VIN 4 5speed that ran with a rod knock for $350!!

And it was on!!

That also answers the question of what I get outta these raggedy ass near base junkers! I sold those 31x10.50ís on steelies for $200. I crushed the tan truck for $150,.I bought those calipers for $8each,pads for $10,and shocks for $35 from a place called API at buyer prices I ended up selling the completed truck for $2,800 after I drove it for a year!!

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Lol,back in the day all I drove was customer abandoned vehicles I got for cheap,..and I used to get a LOT of them,...would fix them, and drive them till something better got abandoned, lol. Then sell them. It was basically free transportation.

I’ve had car notes, and bought brand new vehicles in the past...going back to free vehicles, and no car note is much more enjoyable, and I’m always trading up to a better truck. This way o get to pick what I’m driving too...before it was whatever,..Plymouth station wagon,Volkswagen wagon,Nissan maxima,...Ford Taurus

All I had time to do this weekend with the crappy weather was cut the rear window out of the ‘97 Isuzu Hombre

Allegedly we’re going to be around 70’s next weekend,so I hope to get the Tan ‘00’s windshield cut out,and the Hombre’s glued in its place hopefully,...

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

You think two 10.5oz tubes is enough? Looking up online it says “recommend 2 tubes for most windshields”

Unfortunately I’ll won’t be working on that this weekend. My 01 extended cab’s transmission failed on me this morning. Have no gears, but manually shifted 2nd,and OD. Was shifting hard into second yesterday, and slipping in 3rd for about a month, lol. I’m home in Florida, and my spare Transmission is in Mobile...so,..looks like I’m going to try to limp her to Mobile for a 3 hour ride!! Fun stuff! So,guess I’ll be doing a automatic trans replacement write up,lol.

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Good info on the harnesses. I bought a 99 base longbed last month with a 5 speed that could use power upgrades and buckets. I was thinking a whole Bravada would make a good donor to swap in a tach cluster, swap interior bits like power doors and a short OHC, the double sunvisors, wiring harnesses, the Olds double DIN and also have a 3.73 rear that should be the 8.625" 10 bolt and rear disc, being wider wouldn't bother me at all. Replaced my 94 S10 with a '92 Olds Custom Cruiser 3 years ago with all the right options for me, that car is a blast to drive.

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

99 is an interesting truck to try to upgrade. Iíve had several. They have their own electronics&wiring unique to that model year...so does a 98.

Basically, youíd need a 99 s10 pickup as a donor. A suv harnesses is completely different...it would take a lot of work to make it function correctly,..Iíd assume youíd want keyless entry too,and all the Door sense to work properly..

Hereís where the countdown to extinction part comes in..for those with Hombreís yours just got a little more rare

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Still got it!

I still have the pieces to assemble it too. Ended up moving to Destin, and it got abandoned with the S-series I didn’t sell...I’ve been visiting the old place on the weekends trying to get them back on the road, the yard, house, and garage cleaned up for my kids who live there now while they go to Spring Hill&University of South Alabama...got 8 years&a tight budget before I sell this house,so no rush maybe I’ll drive it to Florida one day? really wish it was younger tho. If it was a ‘00 I’d be more interested in it...I prefer the 00-03 sweet spot on these S-series.

I seen you sold your xtreme!! Like the Jeep tho! my daughter wants an Unlimited 4 door as a College Graduation gift. Hopefully they bring that 4.0 back instead of the caravan engine by then

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Pentastar 3.6 is pretty good, definitely better than the 3.8 Caravan engine was. I got the '99 because it was a 4.3 5-speed long bed, three things I wanted if ever got another S10, price was decent for my area and it was well maintained as far as the mechanicals. The hinges were tight, doors weren't sagging, decent tires, tight brakes, and a good clutch. Way better on the interstate than my old 2.2 was, extra torque makes a big difference pulling grades and in passing

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Idk. I work on the new Jeep Wranglers a lot. they’re the Florida coast salt life/beach life vehicle of choice/status symbol...don’t see many caravans tho..Only tourists bring them to us.. Pretty sure they both have the same 3.6,if they are they’re junk. I’ve seen some extremely low mileage catastrophic failures in those jeeps with that engine. Also, those big ass oil filter housing assemblies that are the whole top of the engine under the intake are susceptible to damage from over tightening on both vehicles Walmart&Quicklubes love to pay me to replace them!

Anyways, replaced the transmission in my Olympic White ‘01 2.2 VIN 5,Auto 3door Extended Cab Base today..

I was going to make a how too,but fýck that!! Fýck those heavy ass 4l60e bullshit transmissions!! NV1500 that bitch or junk it! God I hate doing auto transmission replacement on my back!! My shoulders aching,tired,..getting way to old for this shit.

I would also like to see the 2.2L blazer up and running!

I wish I had the time I used too! HOA in Destin ainít having it. Just doing a transmission out in my driveway would make them loose their shit. Luckily I have a buddy in Ft Walton Beach that let me store another parts truck...shit,none of my S10ís even my daily is allowed in my driveway in Florida, because it doesnít fit the criteria for the neighborhood,..gotta be kept in the garage!

Yíall need to find me a cheap Ď00-03 2.2 5speed s10,and a cheap 00-05 2 door blazer with a nice body!! Itís so difficult to find nice donor vehicles that old!

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

I’ve tried giving it away on here,Craigslist, and Facebook...nobody wanted it. Here all beds are rust free, and the places where beds are rusted out are also too far to come get a free bed. I had a guy from Mississippi act like he was going to come for it then ask if he can only take the front clip, and could I meet him the front clip was sold quickly, long before I even offered the body&bed..wasn’t even in any listing, and stated the powertrain&front clip was gone..plus,why would I meet someone I don’t know half way to give something away? I’d drive past dozens of recycling yards getting there, lol.

I've wanted either one of those beds or a stepside bed since I've had my truck. It's been a lot of years but I know I'll come across a good deal one of these days. All the used s10 parts are garbage around here.

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Iíve recently seen an older stepside your color, like a 96? At the wrecking yard, but unfortunately the bed was a little wonky.

Put an aftermarket 4L60E Deep pan with drain plug on my 2001 Olympic White 3Door Extended Cab!! It already had the deep pan,but once I saw there was a drain plug version available online for $30 I had to get it!! I did drop the pan and replace the fluid when I installed the transmission Sunday, but I wanted to run the new/used trans for a minute to get anymore of the shit outta the torque converter&lines then replace the filter.

Pretty happy with it!! Plus I can more easily keep up on fluid changes. Hopefully this is the last automatic I put in this truck too! If this thing goes itís getting a NV1500!! I will be buying another pan like this tho for my ZR5!! Probably do that in a couple weeks.

It could be pink with some dents for all I care. Anything but rust. Not that my beds rusty or anything.

Did the deep pans come factory on some trucks? What dictated whether or not they did?

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

I really donít know what dictates if it gets a deep pan or not tbh. Both this trucks factory transmission&the Sonomaís transmission where deep pans...surprisingly both of the transmissions where different part numbers. I couldnít find anything online to what the differences are tho. according to what I did find thereís different valving in different models..thereís 60 different variations of the 4L60E! the two part numbers where 24211197 & 24211661. If anyone knows the differences Iíd love to know that! lol. Truck is great tho! Shifts&drives better then it has in a very long time.

Re: Megathred: Countdown to eS10tion

Got some parts in the mail for the 2000 Tan Extended Cab all ready to go,and waiting on good windshield gluing weather!!

Little under $30 shipped heater core from rock auto!(the original was stopped up,and the original reason I pulled the dash)

A cluster from the NE I got off eBay! Compared to the original sun bleached 00í cluster itís printing is stunningly crisp, and bold. Very happy about this detail.

Also got a perfect crisp looking double din bezel off of eBay for $115shipped to complete my near perfect dash I pulled from the 2003 Tan 03 Extended Cab.

Combined with a new headlight w/fogs switch from eBay for $12 shipped. The NOS pair of speaker grilles from eBay for $28 shipped, and A NOS defrost vent I bought several years ago the truck has a good start to being actually worth driving!

All Iím waiting on now is weather nice enough to do the windshield, then install this. Truck has suspension issues as well that need addressed, and I already have some alternate interior choices from other past acquisitions. Until then I think Iím going to pull apart the Dark Red 2000 Extended cab Sonoma tomorrow. At the very least pull the NV1500. I want to get that truck drivable&sold. Pics tomorrow on that one.

I Didn’t know they’re different? I have a ZQ8 parts truck. What am I looking for exactly? The stops on the frame?

I pulled off something I’ve never done on an S10!! Or any vehicle for that matter!!

I was told it can’t be done!!! In your face!!!

I was unsure I could pull it off myself, but it really wasn’t that bad!! I would do it again if the opportunity arose again for a free windshield. Now I’m pissed I scrapped my Victory Red Stepside before cutting the glass out!! It had a newer windshield also
