Cool ~Daily Beater Status~

Aww shit, i just had to do it. Yup, got another S-series.

I needed a beater since my ZR2 just turned into another "too nice" to tear up, besides 4x4.

so anyways, i have been looking for a while for a new daily, found a few 95s but really wanted a 98+. I never did find one at a decent price that wasnt all tore up and gushing oil everywhere.

Ended up buying this first gen from a co-worker who needed a truck instead of a Jimmy. For $1,300, 180K, digital gauges, leather seats, power windows & mirrors, new tires, shocks, and it has the 4.3 . Famous last words, it will be a stock beater....but doesnt appear to be that way since i am already making a thread . probably get a mild 2/3 drop, clean it up, simple cheap mods and just drive it as a daily. at my new job, if it hails while i am at work there is nothing i can do about it. so i need something that will get hailed on and i wouldnt care. so here it is!

First thing i did was find out why the windows dont work besides the driver's side. it has to be guided on the way up and down to prevent binding. with no a/c (compressor needs to be replaced) i better at least have windows!!

Driver's side, simple fix of putting this black clips in the middle vs all on one side which was causing it to catch and bind.

passenger side, unplugged window switch, but also a bad motor too. replaced the motor and the window works. i also used brake cleaner on all the tracks/guides and re-greased them with lithium grease, a very healthy shot of grease.

driver's rear. i hear the motor move a little bit, but stops very shortly and no window movement. pop off the door panel and find that the arm is bent and popped out of the plastic roller. looks like someone pushed down on the window pretty hard. dont think the motor could do this. the window had no bind itself.

I removed it and bent it back with an air hammer and popped the plastic wheel back on and greased it all up, works like a charm.

back passenger window however is a bad motor too. getting power but it barely moves. so i said screw it for now, i will change it another day, at least i have the front 2 windows

So that is all i accomplished today but i plan on cleaning it up real good. i know the interior needs a good once over with the shop vac and some armor all. paint, since its peeling in spots, i really cant buff it. suppose i can, but not sure. I cant get too crazy with this Jimmy since its SUPPOSE to be a beater/daily (again famous last words). we shall see though

It's funny that so far everyone thinks it won't be much of a "beater" by the time Jon has it for a bit. So start placing bets, how long until this think looks/works like new?

I give him two months to get it fixed up and buffed.

I'm not so sure about that. Maybe this one will be the yin to his yang. He may end up just Plasti dipping it from top to bottom, then go ball up in his garage and cry into a shammy towel.

Re: ~Daily Beater Status~

**** you guys

did 12 hours of work today on it to get it "within spec".
Dusty interior, and lots of grass on the carpet and everywhere.

TIG welded some sheetrock screws to some large washers, then proceeded to fix my arm rest after i got new door panel clips.

sorta hacked, but its fixed. when i go to the salvage yard i will try to find a not as beat up one.

interior cleaning process.

spent a few hours vacuuming in itself. everything is armor all'd now.

WRONG!!!
took less than a second day owning it. what did i win?

i did a little buff test on it, found out the WHOLE blazer was covered with a spray of tar.....which made it take 4 hours to buff it.

pretty good huh.

before/after. left side i just washed it and let it dry. that is how bad its faded. check out the tar below the trim. I may have to plastic-dip it. black/red 2 tone wouldn't look too bad i don't think.

it got dark so i continued to buff it in the garage.

"done" but still needs wax. ideally another go around with the buffer, and i still need to do the roof.

Re: ~Daily Beater Status~

It wasnt washed, it was buffed with my random orbital buffer. 4 hours of work...and still technically not "done".

it does look like i just washed it in that one door pic, but like i said that left side was already washed and scrubbed, still was very dull/faded.

Looking good so far Jon! For that tar on the bottom, try some adhesive remover, or wax and grease remover to get the majority of it off, then use an old clay bar to get the rest. That's what works best for me.

^looks like good stuff. I know at work I used 3M General Adhesive Remover which is supposed to be safe for automotive paint and whatnot. Regular customer had managed to brainfart and drive through fresh tar (workers were still putting it down fresh). Well 2 weeks later when she comes in to get an oil change, we see the whole lower half of her WHITE mazda 3 is covered in it, I got the fun task of getting it off. PITA, but it did it. Cept for the wheels for whatever reason.

tl;dr= try 3M

I use the hell out of the Hi-Solv, being the painter for the USPS. Makes easy work of getting adhesive off, left from removing all the decals on the mail trucks. Melts tar right off too.

Re: ~Daily Beater Status~

man that one looks rough.

anyone remove the HVAC panel on a first gen?

cant seem to figure out how to remove the plugs on the back. i can barely pull the unit 1/2" from the dash.

i need to remove the gauge cluster to check out the digital gauges. seems to have a cold solder somewhere as the speedo flakes out every now and then.

iirc when I pulled my hvac panel, there was something that held the harness in place or something. Not much help I know but I think I just yanked mine lol. I replaced it when it wouldnt switch from hot to cold when my heater core went out. It was a bitch, I know that.

Re: ~Daily Beater Status~

Pull the panel out about an inch and on the left side you'll see the cable that attaches to the temp. knob, you have to unhook that cable and the little red clip holding it on. This should give you some room to move it out further to unplug the fan speed switch, the rubber vacuum manifold thing and the main hvac plug. Major pain in the ass.

These things commonly had problems like that. I think the fix is a new/stronger transformer. There are kits and refurb services on eBay.

Big Improvements so far, I'm not surprised to see that you have given it a good clean, which it really needed.

Good start! Can't wait to see how it ends up...

I bet a heat gun would bring the color back into the gray plastic bumper impact strips...

I just noticed this.

You win my utmost jealousy, but on the same hand, I was thinking you have it buffed out, waxed, wheels swapped, interior upholstery replaced, and shampooed by the 5th page, though I'm changing that to the third page.

Also, grab first gen bravada seats! They're so nice!

Oh, let me add that I also expect the frame undercoated/painted and something done with the bottom tar issues by then too.

YES SIR! Took the bulb out for the seatbelt, and ABS (light was on). threw one bulb where the tach is for the orange/red squares, and another where the PRND321 is since it was burnt out.

Took the dash apart a little, needed to get the HVAC panel to stop hissing, found out it was a little wheel that directs the vacuum. got that swapped out with daniel's first gen since his doesnt have HVAC lol. now i have face/floor vents that switch! also my speedo is flaking out, the cluster itself is going bad or something. seen some rebuilt ones on ebay for $150. may have to do that since speedo is a bit important. display fades away and you can tap it and it will come back. soldered a few cracked solder points but that didnt seem to fix it.

Cap and rotor were pretty nasty, took some sandpaper to clean it up a bit, at least until i get a new cap/rotor.

and the front washer fluid motor didnt work, swapped with a spare 2nd gen one and it fits and works! lol. new one installed.

nah, center caps would be nice if i find some, but not necessary. front seats, nope, good enough as they are. door panels, they are fine, console lid....i would like to make it work properly instead of flopping around, but for now, it serves as an arm rest.

YES!

Awesome!

They were kinda known for having issues like that though....really anything digital screened (Is that even a term?) that GM made in the 90's was. Glad you can still find refurbs.
