Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Be 100% sure you torqued those spacers to the correct specs. If they are, you should be worry free. If you over-torqued them, do not be surprised if they crack.. and if they crack... your wheel may come off at a very inopportune time.

I did a lot of research on spacers before I got some for my car and I saw quite a few threads across several forums about people complaining about spacers cracking. Often times it was because they torqued them incorrectly and other times they were made using cheap material. Just a word of advice if you didn't already know

Back on topic... love the bumper... how much do you think it's gonna weigh after you're done with it? How much does the stock one weigh? You gonna add fog lights to it?

On a winch note, if you made the bumper stick out about 3-4 inches further could you incorporate a winch INSIDE the bumper? Have you ever looked at Warn's winch bumpers? I like some of their bumpers but some are just hideous. Yes, lights in the bumper would be a good thing.
there used to be a kit that would install a 8000lb winch behind the stock bumper, and would only have the fairlead showing from the front license plate. being how mine is designed close to the shape of the stock bumper, i dont see any issue at all installing a similar mount.

so today, more steel cut.

made 4 pieces to complete the corner. had to make sure the top was not flexing from the weight.

upside down, but whatever.

also found out the angle of the bottom piece i will use.

still need to do cardboard sides, but it was getting cold.

i torqued them like i do my wheels. as evenly as i can by hand. suppose i can torque them down with my torque wrench sometime.

i think it will weigh 70 lb when done. fog lights...not planning on it currently. maybe some offroad lights up top? i have no idea.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Gotta say I really like the progress to this truck. Joined up a couple of days ago. Haven't had a chance to upload any pictures, yet. Probably my favorite thing you've done to your truck is the LED lighting for your radio and gauges! That looks pretty cool! My S10 is only 2WD, so no offroading (the way you do it) for me... Looking to either upgrade my truck to 4WD next year as a project, or just go the lazy way out and get a -- better optioned than my truck -- ZR2, which would probably be the best thing, anyways. Lol. Awesome truck, man!

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

I got the bottom made up. slopes at 45ļ. i trimmed everything down to the appropriate length later, i just wanted to get the idea of what angles i needed. these angles were tricky!

tad of surface rust.

its getting heavier, and heavier.

TODAY

Thanks for the support everyone.

man, so much on my plate lately. this project, and the job interview i am needing to go to tuesday (goodyear tire factory maintanance tech). its a "tiebreaker" type interview as i scored close to the same as another guy. UGH! lol.
so i cut the 2 other pieces, and i got caught up in my work and didnt take much pics, but then i started the careful process of welding. i did a 1" bead with the backside with the welder set for 1/8". just to give everything support from warping. while doing 12" continuous bead on the corner i did hear a pop/ting. the spot weld on the bottom corner broke, and it just centered the steel plate with the edge

the bead has a gentle roundness to it, pic makes it look super flat.

been a while since i welded a solid 15" bead like this. i need thicker welding gloves because my cow hide gloves dont cut it for this type of continuous welding. the pinky finger on the left glove is all shrunk from the heat.

and i always get FULL Penetration...oh yeah

the bumper is slightly sagging down 1/2". mounts will come tomorrow. 20 feet of continuous welding. never really stopped.

I honestly never was a fan of those fabricated bumpers like that... But from what I can see, that looks like it actually might wind up looking pretty good! Makes me want something like it... Think it'd look good dipped in Chrome? Haha! It's coming along nicely.

i like that bumper. I like how you made the bottom angled, so now you can make it flow with the skid plate almost like one whole piece. I would get some smaller rectangle fogs then cut two holes for them to sit in, it will look real nice.

you really really want to tighten them with a torque wrench. especially since you'll be off-roading.

I've always used a torque wrench on engine, trans, and brake/wheel stuff, but most everything else is wrench tight or impact tight. I let a buddy use my torque wrench to check his lugs during an auto-x day once and he ended up breaking a stud at 100 ft-lbs.

QFT,

any motor,trans,wheel,steering stuff ALWAYS should be torqued down to spec. my, uh, buddy... had a wheel almost fall off when I did a brake job on my old intrepid once. The wheel started vibrating like crazy, and I thought I had the lugs tight, because I did what motornut said he does, consequently, motornut... you should probably stop relying on the lug wrench for torquing.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

well i just put them basically as tight as i can, without going so tight i break the bolt or strip it. It's definitely tight. Either above or equal to what the torque should be.

I do have a torque wrench though, what should the proper torque be?

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Torque wrenches are certainly something you want handy for your engine... We under-torqued the rocker arms in my 2.2 about a year ago, and as I was driving about three days later, suddenly the engine started running like crap and fuel smoke started filling the cab through the AC vents. Broke down, pulled over, pulled everything apart, and two of the rocker arms were just limp. One was BENT! Can't say I don't believe in Torquing anymore. Lol.

Oh and MotorNut, the torque specs for a 92+ S10 should be 100ft. lbs. 82-92 should be 80ft. lbs.

i always torque down my stuff, but lugs i have always done it by "feel". of course i go back and double check the torque. i have pretty good muscle memory when it comes to that stuff. if all else i will torque them with my matco torque wrench. i will check them once i finish this bumper.

no real update besides that i made the mount for the stock side bumper mounts. so now i can roll with it at least. oh and daytime pic.

I only brought it up because some people have over torqued bolt-on spacers to the point where the crack after some time. If they crack... that wheel is coming off.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

The tire shop I worked at torqued every wheel on every vehicle before it left the shop. We had a chart on the wall that listed torque specs for vehicles. s-series should be 100 ft lbs. If a stud broke at 100 ft lbs, chances are that stud had been previously over torqued or was defective.

^I'm willing to bet that the stud was over torqued, probably with an impact wrench since it's not uncommon for that to happen. The stud stretches and weakens, and then broke easily.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

some real progress today!! oh and SAS...the "paint" isnt that special that i am going to use...just something that can be touched up after "using" the bumper. and no not plasti-dip LOL.

anyways so i made the corner mounts. i made sure they will not contact the tire.

i had the heat turned up a tad too high and had some undercut . not the end of the world but BOO....

basically "complete" until i get the tow mounts made.

still need to weld the backside fully just for fun.

mounted it real quick to test for any possible tire contact. looks like i am good! really i dont think i will upgrade to 32s. no real purpose to currently for the type of offroad we are doing and if i ever do a slight trim will fix any rubbing.

then started the LONG process of grinding down the welds.

had a few low spots.

simple few tacks.

and smoothed out. my phone doesnt like the shine from the metal. always hard to get a good picture of it. some care went into the corners making sure all for edges "meet up"

i spent quite a bit of time making the corners nice and round, but not too round to make them loose their angle.

here is the bottom corner.

oh and the mount for the corners using the stock bracket.

i need to push it a tad forward.

wasnt exactly fun. well except i had my noise canceling ear buds on listening to some techno

oh and my Bilstein shock came in today. got it warrantied out since somehow it blew out. this was a taken a week ago. oil is ALL over the place on the fenderwell since then lol.

it was dripping off the control arm and onto the tire.

guess i had a dud shock or something. i know they are a year old with 20K, but the guys at SynergyOffroad.com hooked me up with a replacement via warranty.
