Thumbs up Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Sooooo, long story short, my job (coca cola) is getting rid of the company vehicles, you guys may have seen that astro van in the background of my pics...well that is now gone and they pay us mileage @ .55 cents per mile, and i do quite a bit of driving.

anyways i searched HIGH and low on craigslist for a new daily...Never found anything as it had to be 3 things.

1. ext cab is a must
2. 5 speed tranny (unless 4x4)
3. NO TAN/Light color interior! i hate it....i want a dark graphite interior.

...the tough decision came to this.....a fuel saving 2.2 5 speed, or a 4x4 to have fun in and be able to explore something else besides the lowered community....but at the cost of MPG.....

Well, i decided to go with a 4x4 because

1. my first truck was a 4x4 86 toyota pickup and it was fun.
2. when it snows (rarely does but we get some) or when it rains i want the ability to go anywhere i want and generally a "truck" any idea how long its been since i drove up a curb?...i forgot the feeling.

now, not just any 4x4 will do, i wanted a ZR2, might as well right? if a clean 2.2 s10 5 speed came up, i'll take that offer, well ended up finding this zr2 on craigslist. its a 2000 s10 ZR2 with 129K, and flowmaster? exhaust (have to check), and slight rust but nothing crazy. My pet peeve is interior, i cant stand a broken ass interior and this one surprisingly had a well kept interior and garage kept in its lifetime.

so it started off as this, $5,000

Then turned into this.

Interior wasnt too bad, no cracked panels or dash, but just a little dusty.

the extent of the rust is this.

followed by "hot spots" under the cab.

Nothing crazy right? i know my sonoma wasnt this pretty from the start and took a bit of work to get where its at (and still not done) so with this i plan on undercoating all of it like i did my sonoma to regain some "black" under the truck. basically i want to get rid of all the old dirt, so i can put new dirt. and in the process deal with any issues that arises.

Now i did inspect mine and find out it DOES have the notorious zr2 frame crack, i will have to tackle this sometime as i gain knowledge of IRS suspensions. but now its just a crack (some rust highlighting the crack) but has not started to separate or open...so just a crack. From what I've read even if it was never off-roaded the crack still appears from street driving....

So, this truck will be detailed up and down like my sonoma, BUT will be used as a truck (not abused) and i wont be afraid to get it dirty.

so let the dealing begin!!

STEP 1, remove old ass hood insulation/dust collector

STEP 2, detail interior. I wiped all the dirt/dust off the door jambs and rubber seals, its the little details that count. (view of stepdads yellow truck i was borrowing until i found one to drive to work)

STEP 3, stand back and appreciate your work

next, degrease time! to the left, old tranny fluid from a leaking output seal...to the right, just hot water sprayed on it from a garden hose. telling you guys, hot water is the shit! now i can tell if that seal leaks or not.

i did give that engine bay a bath.....but just a bath to get rid of dust/dirt...nothing crazy (and forgot to take a pic). removed the bug deflector as well.

so after a quick bath i had to take side by side pics.

amazing height difference lol.

I got them both to fit in the garage.....but i have too much shit on the side, like spare 2.2 motor on stand, engine lift, then the compressor on the left, and welder....i need to figure something out. at least maybe paint a line to follow with the tire or maybe a dot on the wall to aim a headlight to prevent any accidental mirror shaving...

So as you can see, i have plenty of work ahead of me....but i plan on making it into a clean daily to drive around and have fun. lift kit for now is out of the question due to MPG reasons, but i do plan on building front/rear bumpers for it and a few other things. open to any suggestions guys!

oh and the owner didnt have the key to the hitch...guess my plasma will make quick work of it, but for now its staying.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

around here dont be surprised to see a clean sonoma going for 8K...all stock with a hard top tonneau cover (clean like immaculate)

but here the s10 trucks sell for a lot more than in other parts of the country. not sure why but they do. an average needs some TLC truck goes for 2-3K, anything in the nice range is 4-7K, and 4x4 can go for even more.

Personally i dont care what it costs....i get what i like and couldnt pass this one up. im talking about 2 months looking in Craigslist and other sites for something worthy.....all shit.....and when i do find a good truck it has that damn light colored interior, rusted completely out, or its an auto 4 cyl ext cab....if i have to put up with an automatic it might as well be the v6.

Truck looks great! I know you're going to detail this thing, and paint and undercoat and it will be VERY nice and clean, and a simple, yet effective daily driver that isnt scared to get dirty, and do its job as a truck.

I need a favor.. a weird yet simple task.

i bought a 2000 sonoma. missing the headliner, and the latch cover you notice that covers the little striker bolted to the roof itself..

I bought a headliner for a non 3rd door, obviously it isn't the same, but i want to see how its cutout behind that little plastic trim panel if you can remove it for me, and take a picture with it off and on, that would be GREAT!

looks like a good find..i'm in the process of trying to find a 4 door blazer or crewcab colorado for a daily...although it'd be nice to find a crew cab zr2, i think i'd want a little more room than an extended cab though..looking forward to seeing your updates.

I loved my old 2000 blazer zr2, but I kep getting the itch to lift it and etc. I couldn't get anyone to bite on it for a $4,000 cash price. But I did end up making out on a trade.

Interior looks good, I dig your project threads. Because you don't cheap out on the little shit.

The coke reps up here in Michigan are going though the same thing with the company cars, except they have restrictions. Vehicle can't be older the 5 yrs old, and they only get .38/ mile, with a vehicle allowance per month (not sure what it is). I'm a Pepsi bulk rep, and talk to a few different guys weekly in some of my different accounts.

Love both your trucks!

^ that 5 year thing is for the account managers, or the ones who merchandise small stores, make orders, etc. They get less milage but get a "deprecation" check every paycheck or month. since in their position they were "given" company vehicles that they could also use for personal use.

i dont think this one will be clean as the sonoma, but the sonoma will sit longer, and therefor be cleaner...... in fact i am having a hard time deciding how to go about this on the Z. (frame)

1. chassis saver...used it on my noma and have mixed feelings about it and with the high profile of the frame, UV will destroy the color.
2. rubberized undercoating. should do the job, but for whatever reason i decide to remove it, its a huge bitch.

so should i undercoat EVERYTHING like leafs, rear end, frame with the stuff? or paint the rear end and leafs, and undercoat the rest......maybe just paint the frame you can see? everything else can be coated?

well, today i started buffing the paint....it had lots of little dull scratches from tree branches or something....shit is annoying but i can deal with the major scratches....i just dont like how dull it made the clearcoat look.

guess this was a door or shopping cart...must have been a huge shopping cart if so (buffing compound to the left)

yay! a few deep scratches stayed, but got 90% of it out. check out all the rock chips on the door....should i get the bottom half of the truck painted with bedliner?

finally all buffed.

oh and has a bed-liner too.

So that marks 3 things off my list of what i was going to buy/do.

1. bedliner
2 window tint (has 5%)
3. aftermarket keyless entry with remote start.

Open to any suggestions on the undercarriage.

Every time I wash my truck I take a towel to the door jams, under hood and top of the engine. Like you say, it doesn't take much to make a big difference. I also spray off the undercarriage and wash wheel wells. It's not immaculate, but it's better then most.

Do to being under construction I haven't touched it in a while. But After I get it painted, I will go back to my every 2 weeks it gets washed and waxed routine. And always dusted twice a day when dry.

so whats so "bad about the black box? just ugly?

oh, not much of an update but did drive it 100 miles round trip today (work). drove real nice, but had a slight tire vibration @ 70.

well, my 3rd door stopped "latching" today. the top worked fine, but the bottom failed to "lock"

after messing with it awhile i got it. guess i need to lube up the mechanism.

oh and the 3rd door has been repainted, now it must have been a small fender bender or a dent from something else (still has the factory door skin), the bed and door isnt painted. may go to the salvage yard and see if i can find a blue door to swap to....doesnt really "bother" me but i would like it the same color....(previous owner mentioned it to me beforehand)

comparing next to my buddies blazer. hes got his torsion keys maxed out....i heard that it isnt good, even dangerous to do so. he needs a bumper, killing his mpg.

speaking of mpg....

filled up today.....did my math, came up with 17.6........Program i was using on my phone (dash command, monitors everything) said 17.4. so not bad being .2 off!! i had it connected every time.

Thing is, i think the thermostat is half working....like the spring is weak and its partly open because it reached a blazing 147ºF this morning on the way to my first stop (40 miles) but later on today when it was 61º outside the temp rose to 173 like it had a 180º T-stat....

so i have a feeling its stuck partly open or opening prematurely. sure that would help my MPG some... also using the program i found out i can go from 17-18 MPG @70 to 19-20 MPG @ 65 MPH. and going 60 MPG it stayed about the same at 19-20 instant MPG. so looks like 65 is the sweet spot

Both. I got what's called a "go link" brand.

Others have wifi and Bluetooth but figured all that extra bs will probably loose connection and things go wrong... But this cable is just that. OBDII one side, 30 pin iPhone on the other. It also charges your phone while you use it so it's a charger too lol. The program is a bit battery intensive but you can basically monitor every sensor, even O2 voltages and you can watch it graph them up and down as voltage is applied in real time. But this cable can use the go link software or the dash command. Clear check engine lights, etc...very worth it.

Looks nice! U should repaint that 3rd door and the bottoms of the doors and rockers. Wouldnt really be that big of a job, or too costly if u do it yourself. Could have it done in a day or so and it would look better than bed liner IMO.

^ yes, if we drive out of town to our route we get a company vehicle, but if you drive in town then no....just depends on your location. Pays good down here, well enough to where buying the Z wasnt that big of a deal. but being single does help lol *forever alone*

Yeah i could repaint the bottom...but you gotta think, MORE chips are going to show up, especially with that blue. so IMO painting it again would just make it look like poo later....

and remember guys, this isnt going to be like my other truck, its just going to be a nice 4x4 that WILL get used (not abused).

I may just leave the chips and just go with a repainted 3rd door. i can always do that....chips i can live with.....now the zr2 fender flares...not quite sure what to do with those.....

OH! almost forgot, yes indeed the thermostat was bad. it wasnt sticking open.....but instead it was opening too soon or too easily. they didnt have a 180 in stock but i picked up a 195 and temps are back to normal the condition on the thermostat wasnt bad, didnt have crap built up on it, just a clean thermostat that didnt work properly. so hopefully i can maybe reclaim that 20 MPG that these are suppose to get.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

I have the 3.73 rear end. It was one of the first things I checked lol. Not sure about 3.73 and 31" tires though as far as "final" gear ratio.

17.6 sounds pretty good considering it barely reached closed loop. Also here the highway isn't flat, there are lots of big hills just up and down most of the way. I might add that figure was also including city driving as well, not pure highway, and with the truck not reaching temp I'm sure that affected mpg in the city.

Now with the new tstat on the trans shifts even smoother. So I'll post an update on the mileage. There is a slight rough idle so that may or may not contribute to mpg.

Zr2's come standard with the 3.73 gear ratio. And don't expect the Z to get much better as most people say 19 mpg is really good for them.

Well you forgot Phil, I own an almighty 2.2, so I KNOW how to drive like a grandpa.

But I would be fine with ~17-18. I wasn't expecting to get super high mpg in the first place. I think I may be able to get 19 though. I'll try.....

Check all of the components, make sure the brakes aren't dragging and the bearings spin smoothly. Also, don't forget that it's winter season now so the gas you buy has a lower energy content. And the cooler air doesn't help. Once it's summer you might see the 19 you want.

True. Forgot all about winter gas.

Though my e brake doesn't work....it does partially hold the truck but when applied the truck easily rolls in neutral backwards. Suppose the shoes inside the rotors are wore out.
