Another New Toy in Saipan

Well this really blows.
I took a bunch of pictures and started a thread (before this one) and after trying every way I know, not only did the photos not load, but the damn new thread vaporized.
Since photobucket went rogue, I have had almost zero success loading any pictures.
What a way to start a thread.

Suggestions?

You can still use PB. There's a couple other options too. Flickr, post image, etc...

Mo,I tried Flickr, they changed their format or something. They have a share feature but it takes you to a URL.

I didn't want to post a URL. I wanted to post a picture. It says 'share' then takes you to twitter or some other social media. WTF.
I copied and pasted (obviously) but that's not ok.

Never had any luck with Flickr....www.postimage.org works well for me. Besides, if you make an error...thumbnail vs full-size...I can fix it...lol

Sorry, I know it's a boring rig, but for a 2005 model, it's pretty minty. Frosty A/C and everything works.

Anyone like sashimi?
54 pound yellow fin tuna that was swimming a few hours ago and on the plate in front of me right after the picture was taken. Fresh?
No contest. World class.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

I also just bought a 2003 Nissan Frontier that was tattered by Typhoon Yutu. $800.
Runs perfect but it's an automatic.
Need a LF fender, hood, tailgate, windshield, both side windows and some minor body work.
A/C needs a charge and it needs an industrial cleaning.
A truck like that (here) in good condition is $3 to 5 K.
At least I have another new project.
Pix shortly.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Sorry about the thumb pix, the internet here is not so great.
Anyway, I'll post more pix shortly.
I had the car washed, they charge $15 (not cheap) but they dry the car, clean the trunk, (!) door jambs, vacuum the bag out of the interior, shine the tires, and spray the windshield with Rain X. Not too bad for the price.
The car looks fresh.

The Frontier I bought is actually a 2004, but who's counting? I just sent it out to have the interior cleaned. During the typhoon, both side windows were blown out and the interior looks like a swamp (without the water). I bought a new LF fender (blitzed by flying debris) and will buy the hood shortly. I'll try and post pix of this gem shortly.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

I actually live here for the time being. I arrived in early October 2018 and have been here since.
I am working a construction project that involves building concrete (bunkers) houses that are typhoon resistant.
They plan on building about 200 of them, so I guess I can count on being here for a while.
I am the construction manager on the government side so I'm doing all sorts of stuff with contracts, permitting, zoning

Anyway, I hadn't touched a ratchet in 6 months or so. Time has arrived.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

2004 Nissan Frontier I bought last Saturday. Hit by the typhoon but runs super. I bough a fender and hood, paint is next and various other clean ups.
Had the interior done yesterday, looks pretty decent.
They washed my Toyo. They go pretty crazy with cleaning. They do the door jambs, all of the rockers, under the bumpers and clean the interior.
Sorry about the thumbs, someday I'll figure out a photo share site again.

Funny you mention that... The CEL is on as well as the air bag light. No air bag boom though.
I wish this one was a 5 speed. Oh well.
I am probably going to eliminate the driver airbag since the steering wheel wore through at the top. The metal is showing through the rubber.
I'll have to black out the airbag light or something. I know it's not really Kosher, but I'll give the wheel to the next buyer and tell them the bag is out.
I've already had an offer.
Trucks like this are really hard to buy as a used vehicle on the island. No one sells them once they own one.

My Toyoglide is boring. It's almost perfect and needs very little.
I'm installing new fog lights and harness, a new brake pedal pad (wooo), and other stupid stuff.

The Nissan is much more of a challenge....

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Went to the Nissan dealer... The key for this rig is badly worn, so, I figured time for a new one.
How much?

Anyone got an idea?

$385 !!!!!!!!!

I told the guy to pound sand.

Ebay - 2 keys = $12

Nissan aholes - 1 key $145 FYVM.

Program it - $145 (takes 10 minutes)

Yeah, I love Nissans.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

I'm sure be trapped on an island doesn't help the price, but that's about typical dealer markup. The automakers are getting as bad as the US drug companies, raising prices prices on some generics 800 to 1800% in one year with no increase in their cost of materials or labor.

What does it cost Nissan to stamp out a key? Less than a nickel I'd bet.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

That’s why I don’t eff with imports for my personal use. Parts are just WAY too expensive. I found a way around euro parts, but not Japanese cars&trucks..yet.

have a buddy that has a ‘90 300zx,and the rack&pinion price totals the car out.

That truck looks pretty ruff. They’re not worth a whole lot here as you know...I think he paid like $2,500 for his 5-6years ago,and he’s put probably that much in it since he’s had it. it’s easy to do,because parts are so expensive. I had a coworker with one that color but it was a longer bed model? auto 4banger,..I think he paid $4,500,but that was long ago..Import vehicles are worth more as parts then a whole..you could probably get 2grand or more for that drivetrain out..trans,engine..but paid $800 for the truck.

American vehicles are the reverse of that..think,you can buy a 5.3 for less then that Nissan 4banger.

What’s the long term plan over there? Are you coming back stateside?

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

There are almost no US trucks here. I have not seen one first gen S10 yet. I've seen 2 second gens, I almost crapped.
Everything is Asian. Early (90s) Toyotas are max here. Nissans are also big, followed by Mazda, Isuzu, an occasional Suzuki and some mutts that people have glued together from scrap. Ford Rangers are here, but no Chevys.
Pickups are big $$ here. Once I clean this pig up, I could see getting $3 to $4 K for it.
It looks ruff, but a few body parts, some paint and clean up, it will fly.

I don't know how long I'll be here. At least until October (?) maybe.
This place has 52,000 people and not a lot more. No drag strip, almost zero performance machines and TONS of skying 4x4s.
A buddy does most of the 4x4 lifts on the island, and there are many. Not unusual for someone to drop 10K on a lift, wheels/tires and dress up stuff.

The definition of high performance (here) is to glue a magnaflow to your cut off exhaust. No headers or tailpipe. They think they are fast...

Oh, and bondo on a cheap hood scoop and scab a wing on the back.
Hyundai Accents with a tail and a fake hood snorkel... Can't hit 80 MPH, but boy racer is the way.

I'll try and add more pix

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Small update...
I don't know why I bought them, I haven't seen fog here in 8 months. I got a set of new yellow lens fog lamps for the Toyo rig.
Now I can look like the other idiots who drive around with their FOG lights on in clear weather - NOT. That will likely never happen.

The current fog lights on the car are hazy and rusty looking. At least these will add some color and looks to the front of this boring vehicle.
I'll also buy some LED bulbs which will give the light an unusual color through the yellow lenses - in heavy rain when needed.

Oh, and the Nissan Frontier I bought - update...
I popped about $1,400 last weekend on the POS. New windshield ($420!!!!!) installed, new hood, L fender, tailgate and paint + supplies to paint the parts.
Took out the crusty OEM radio and will order a new double DIN unit to replace the junker. Since this is a 3 day weekend coming up, I hope to do a ton of work on this unit.
Yeah, I know, I'll post pix.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Pix...
I painted the Frontier hood, tailgate and fender this last weekend. Fender and tailgate pix, I also installed new tail lights since one was missing and the other was blitzed.
Still have lots to do. Nothing is easy on this damn island...
A friend is letting me use all of his tools and equipment in exchange for me helping him out with his projects.
He has 2 old Brit Minis, an Austin Sprite, a TR3, an MG TD, a VW convert which I am building an engine for, a BMW bike with sidecar, 2 Ducatis, a Sportster, an 2 Moto Guzzis... And stuff I forgot about.
Sound familiar?

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Well, after sweating my bag off this weekend, I helped a buddy with lots of weird toys get his BMW R75 (with sidecar), his Sportster and his Ducati 900 running. All of them needed electrical work so they would be roadable.
I also hung the new fender on my Frontier, which makes the driver door look like crap. Of course... the fender flare was wiped, and the RIP OFF Nissan dealer wants $200 for the stinkin piece of plastic. Not happening.

I also bought this the other day. Another buddy of mine moved to Belize and is opening a bar there. He built this crazy HD FLH with a monster engine. He needs the $$ to open the bar... so you know I had to help him out. He spent $7K on the engine and the rest of the bike is pretty much new also.
Now all I have to do is go back home, drive to Massachusetts and pick the POS up.
Don't know when that will happen.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

It is completely out of control to live on an island at the end of nowhere and try to buy vehicle parts. Everything takes a minimum of 2 weeks to arrive here - if the supplier will ship to this place.
I ordered a bag load of parts for this Frontier and (supposedly) a lot of them have arrived.
The mail service here sux BIG TIME. It's the USPS, but they do not have mail carriers. Everything goes to a PO Box and you have to pick up everything in person.
So… how does a fender fit in a PO Box???
They issue a yellow card in your PO Box and you wait in line for 20 to45 minutes, then they give you your package.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Both door glasses were blown out by the storm.
Courtesy of another forum (Infamous Nissan) member, I bought both door glasses for $200 shipped.
Not cheap, but on the Island, there are no upulls or junk yards for that matter.
I priced the glass... $240 each!!!!! And that was not from the Nissan dealer.
So, I guess $200 isn't too bad.
Ebay for the same glass = $62 each with free shipping - but you know well and good - the sellers will not ship to Saipan even though the USPS is the main form of postal service here.

It's an '85 280i which is the Tasmin series. Good call.
TVR couldn't figure out what to call them, so they changed the name a few times. Same basic body though.
Mine has 35K miles on it.
It has a weezer 2.8 Cologne V6 in it, the Euro version - which had crap heads.
I bought a set of US version heads (3 exhaust ports instead of 2... One Siamesed for 2 cylinders) The US heads flow a ton better than the Euros. I had larger (2.9 V6) valves installed, match ported and did some inside port work too.
I'm dumping the Jetronic fuel injection. The ethanol in today's fuel is very bad for this type of injection.
I'm going to run a pretty stout cam, and am having a guy in Canada reconfigure the US 2 barrel intake to fit a Holley 390 4 barrel. I also found an ultra rare MSD distributor for it.
The PIA for all of this is fabricating a set of headers. Not a big deal, just time consuming.
Oh, I also found a 5 speed transmission, this is currently a 4 speed.

So, I am in Saipan, the car is in Baton Rouge and my shop is in New York State.
Yep, this will happen soon.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Continuing with this thread...
I found a new Chinese body shop not far from my apartment. A guy told me that he had his Toyo cleaned up and painted there. I looked at his car and the paint looked really good. He said there were dents everywhere - caused by Typhoon Yutu.
The job cost him $1800 total.

I knew they would charge me $800 to straighten and paint the driver side. If you look at the pic of the truck after the storm, the driver side took all of the damage.
I went and had them estimate it... sure enough... estimate was $750.
So... i said I'd pay them 800 and had them paint everything on the driver side. I had previously painted the L fender and mounted it.
Hopefully, they will do as good a job on my truck as they did to the guy's Toyota.

Now the entire left side will be paint matched and straight..

Of course - I'll post pix when it's done.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

I went to the body shop yesterday to drop off a deposit.
I almost crapped.
All of the body work is done, they were ready to paint it yesterday!
I looked it over and the work is straight!
They said it would be done today, but I'll pick it up tomorrow.

If they apply the paint as well as they did the dent fix, the truck is going to look amazing.

Pix very shortly.

Re: Another New Toy in Saipan

Pix!

It's in the spray booth now. The light was pretty crappy, so the pictures are too.
It's straight and they said it will be done tomorrow.
For $800, I would have taken a couple of years off my life to do it in this short of a time span.
The only real time I have is weekends, I guess I could work nights, but I think that would be taking advantage of my friends shop.

Anyway, more pix shortly.
