1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Well, this was given to me for Christmas in 2010. It was basically a shell since the engine/transmission have been removed. It's been sitting at my Grandfather's and I've been trying to get a chance to work on it. Well, I've finally pulled the trigger and trailered it up to my College so I can get it trail worthy for now.

Stock configuration.
318, 727 transmission, NP208 transfer case, 9-1/4" rear end (locked...but I haven't checked to see if factory or aftermarket). Dana 44 front with CAD. 32" tires currently on 15" rims. It was picked up mainly for the parts inside of it as it was used as storage and the owner tried to swap a built 383 into it, but failed with the build and didn't know what he was doing.

This is what it looked like basically when I got it.

No engine as you can see

I no longer have that front bumper, my cousin wanted it for his older Power wagon and got it. Not too big of a deal for me though since down the road I want a winch and that one wouldn't work for a winch.

So it's been at my Grandfathers.

But I decided I wanted to mess with it finally. 250 miles later. I have it at college.

Unloaded at my current residence.

Cleaned out the parts that were in it. Np203, NP208, 727 trans, drive shafts, transmission supports, and a few other items. The air tanks are mine previously that I had thrown in there for transport.

I swapped out the front seats with ones from an 82, so lower back and are red.

I'll swap out the rear seat this weekend for the matching back. Also, someone had installed a roll bar, it's a factory roll bar I believe, but it has been welded together, OEM are only bolted.

Now you're wondering what my plans are....well, I have a parts truck that was also given to me. 1977 D200, so a 3/4 ton dodge with a 400 big Block, 727 auto, NP203 (full time 4x4). It's sitting on 8-lug Dana 60 rear and Dana 44HD front. They are open axles though. The cab was swapped to a newer style 80+ and was never wired up. They probably couldn't figure out the differences in wiring to be honest.

The engine, it could use a little cleaning up, but it runs and was rebuilt not too long before the cab swap. The carb and stuff is sitting in my grandfathers garage. I have everything I need to make it run.

For right now, I need to trailer the parts truck up to Flint as well, which I'll be doing this weekend. First off, I just want to swap the motor into it and get it running, nothing fancy and no money involved hopefully. I have spare parts to sell off and the 77 to scrap once I get everything I need from it. I'm going to keep the axles from it for now, but I may or may not swap them out. I've got a lot of things to factor in, like tires, gearing, lockers, etc......

Currently I do not have any good offroad tires, except a set of 31's that'd be decent, but small for my tastes. Right now it has crappy 32's on 15" rims and I have a set of 16" rims for it as well. The 77 has 16.5" rims, so 8-lug won't help me out either right now unless I get used military tires. But, that's for later on after I get it up and running.

I'll try to keep this updated, but for now, I just want a good offroad toy and have some fun while I'm in college.

Thanks for reading, I know it was long. At least this is already a SFA from factory.

Thanks, I like the front end a lot on them, especially the Ram ornament. Which has been bolted down, so it's a little harder for someone to walk off with.

Well, I trailered the parts truck up here this weekend. I'll get pics of it later as I got in late last night. I can't wait to get started on the engine swap.

This past weekend I brought the parts truck up as well.

And a few pics of my RC versus my Silverado.

Bill, let me know, there's not a whole lot left on the parts truck though. My grandfather is a big mopar guy, I don't think he's owned anything that wasn't Mopar to be honest.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

No, the engine going into the ramcharger is from a 77 D200, or 3/4 ton dodge pickup. It's the factory 400 big block Mopar made back in the 70's to replace the 383 big block after smog and detuning started to lower the performance of all engines.

No updated today, college is keeping me busy and I don't really plan to mess with it much during the week. I'm not forgetting about you guys though, and I really want to get this running.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Well, I removed the motor from the parts truck, right now it's on my garage floor, well a cart and I plan on installing it later this week when I get some time. I didn't have enough time before I had to get to work. Here's some pics though.

Door panel back on....but power windows are inop.....so maybe bad switches. I'll play with it more after the motor swap.

removed the trim around the doors, it was cracked anyways.....now it looks better IMO.

roll bar.

Lifted the cab back on the parts truck for engine access.

like a gentleman.

So basically I only undid 4 bolts hold the motor and trans in.....one bolt per motor mount and two for the transfer case......makes it an easy setup though.

Found this on the passenger frame rail, I think it's for dual gas tanks...not sure though.

That's all for now though. I have the truck cab back on the frame again and the engine removed. Now I need to just get the axles off and scrap it.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Well, I've had a busy weekend. The engine is in now though, now I get to wire it and plumb everything else to it. Also, I still need an exhaust and I have to figure out the rear driveshaft since the old one is too long.
Getting the motor in.

Driver side bracket

Passenger side bracket, which you'll notice the metal part is located incorrectly here compared to the later pic.

Motor is in.

Sits better with it in now.

Had to move the metal motor mount in front of the engine tabs since the previous owner had put them behind...which gave me about an extra hour of work since I didn't know how it was supposed to be until I couldn't get it to line up correctly.

passenger side in.

overall, it's a mess but in due time.

NP203 T-case shifter.

Well, I'm at work now and probably won't mess with it now until later this week. I'm researching all of the wiring and anything else I need to do to get it running. I'm glad the motor is in place now at least. Maybe Tuesday I can go to a junkyard and look for engine accessories that I need and their brackets. I might keep the front off until I get move of it finished just to give me access, but I'd like to get it back on soon so I can start wiring up the battery.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

It was pretty much top of the line back in 85, and it did have factory A/C. However, I don't currently have any of the lines or compressor to reinstall right now. If I can find the brackets and compressor for a big block, I'll be adding A/C back to it as I want it. The only thing it doesn't have is power locks, but it has power windows, but maybe locks were extra or not yet as common for 85 Ramchargers. Not really sure since 86 it seems that if you had windows, you had the locks as well. I might install power locks just for the hell of it since I did see a Ram in the yard that's mostly complete and has A/C, locks etc......

I may not be doing anything this weekend if I go boating instead, but that means I might be picking up an Alternator, power steering pump and some other items I need to get it running.

Also, I found out that my rear driveshaft is a couple inches too long. So I might get the 77's cut down since it was a bigger tube than the original one from the Ramcharger.

Do you plan on eventually swapping the bigger rear axle and finding a front D60 too, only after getting lockers for them? The power locks thing is a little odd. I figured you would decide to run AC since unlike a K5 or Bronco these can't open up.

It's an offload toy, no point in cleaning the motor other than to get the debri off.

And yes, I want a/c just thinned take time. As for the axles, I plan to sell the spare set for now to get some money. Maybe down the road I will get a set of 70/60 for it. But for now, stock should be fine.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

For right now I plan on just running the NP203 as a full time 4x4 and leaving the stock shifter. Mainly because I'm trying to not spend any money on it until after I graduate college. I just want an offroad toy and it's not really going to ever see pavement other then possibly a short distance to my school and I might drive it next winter if it's running good enough. I also need to verify that the case is good since I haven't driven it, but everything seems to work when I shifted it and moved things by hand. I do have a spare 203 if I need it as well.

Down the road, I might get the part time conversion for it, but the full time might be fun, we'll see how I like it once it's running. As for the twin stick, I already with it had that as it's really easy to go past hi/low and into the loc mode. But unless I find one in the yard or online for cheap, I'll stick with stock components for the mean time.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

No real updates, I put the front end back on for now just so I don't lose bolts. This last weekend I picked up the alt, power steering and pulley/fan I need for it. So now I've got the parts I need to begin working on it and finishing it up. I also picked up an electronic dizzy to get rid of the points one I currently have in the motor. Maybe this weekend I'll fire it up.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

I'm going to push myself this weekend and see if I can get it moveable under it's own power.

Here's a teaser for now. I'd like to point out this is the first time it's been started in at least 2 years and it sat for a couple before that even. So I know it's a little noisy on the top end, but it should clear up as I let it idle. I only let it run for less than a minute today since I didn't have any coolant/lines.

Woah, awesome, I just noticed this in your sig. These are awesome trucks. My dad had a 90' D250 w/ 4speed and a 360 for 18 years and I miss seeing it in our driveway. Such cool looking square bodied trucks those were.

I've had wayyy to many of these trucks. (Currently...on number 7)

My 84 had electric locks, where if you pushed down one lock stem, the other side would click down also. They didn't work tho, lol. Neither did the power windows, a/c or heater.

There's a guy over on ramchargercentral named Jungle Jim who makes really nice lift kits for these trucks if you were going that route.

But it looks good! Subb'd.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Well, not a whole lot was accomplished this weekend, however I did finally get it to move under its own power.

I put a different grille on a couple weeks ago.

Found out my radiator leaks, so I need to pick up another one. I'm also having an issue with the connector for the heater core hoses on the water pump. One of them is siezed so I'm not sure how I'll remove it now, it doesn't have a hex shaft or anything so I've been trying vice grips and channel locks.

Looked at the wiring and figured out what goes where and what I still need for it to run correctly. I'm getting close to being able to drive it. I hooked up the fuel lines, so now the gas tank is being used and locked the front drive shaft into 4x4.

Well, I'm tired, so here's a video of it starting up, please note that my battery wasn't fully charged since I don't have the alternator hooked up and I've probably started it 5 times on that charge and once cranked it over for a bit to prime the fuel.

Mine doesn't have electric locks, when the passenger door was apart, I looked for the solenoid and found nothing, and no wiring either. My passenger power window works, the driver does not, so I get to diagnose that soon too.

As for the lift, for now it will stay stock height, but I'd love to get like an 8" lift kit in a couple of years.

Put a bumper on it finally.

Then I did some light offroading today just to test it out. Had a blast and it works, although it's running hot, so I need to figure out what is causing that. It could be caused by the stock fan not pulling enough CFM's, so I'm going to replace that with a e-fan later this week.

This is the guy that went with me in his lifted K10 on 1 tons.

I'll post up some pictures later today, but I went offroading again yesterday. Had a blast, got stuck and I pulled two other people out, so overall it went well. My battery is done for I think and my alternator is squeeling now, it did get some mud/water on it though. So I probably fried the bearings.

I know a little bit, depends on what you're wanting to know.

I'm also on Ramchargercentral.com which has a lot of information on RC's as well.

So I have pictures to post from offroading but they are on my buddies camera and he hasn't given me the photos yet....still waiting.

89 ram rebuilt motor i hooked up all the wires back to the connections. i get fire, air and gas. timing shows to be correct and once i got it to spit and sputter but that was it. It does have throttle body and pcm under the hood. i replace the wires, cap and coil and still nothing.tried the 180 out time, nope still nothing. so im just about out of options.

Sucks about not getting it to run. Start checking the computer and anything related to figure out if it's not firing at the right time or check to make sure that it's actually firing at the plugs, and not just the dizzy.

Alright, here are some pics from the Mounds. Not too many pics since my buddy didn't really take any.

Some fun in the water/mud.

We had 3 vehicles, my Ramcharger, a Canyon and a Wrangler.

Video of the wrangler getting stuck....the ruts were deep.

I wish he'd taken more pics....but oh well. I had a blast and nothing broke, although I need to fix some stuff now before I really take it off roading again.

I'm lucky that my engine is carbed and doesn't use anything from the stock ignition. Pretty much it only needs a ground and power wire and the engine will run itself.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Update Time:

So I trailered it back to school with me.

Ford, Dodge, and Chevy, the big 3.

Snow has melted and I haven't had a chance to test out the offroad capability.....so this will do for now.

A bit of snow, but it didn't last and melted. Made an icy mess actually.

So I've been wanting a hitch on it, to move the trailer around (in snow) and to use as a tow point while offroading. Well, I couldn't find any used, and any at the junk yards are too rusted to bother with. So I bought a Draw-tite, universal hitch, and hoped that it wouldn't hang too low. Well, it's a bit lower than I wanted, but it's not too bad at least. It was a pain removing the stock bumper, since all of the bolts were rusted, and I ended up breaking every one of them, so I need new bolts for the bumper. I drilled out the rivets in the back and drilled the holes for the hitch. Finally it's mounted.

I haven't put the bumper back on yet, but I need to fix the wiring in the back first. It appears that there was once a trailer harness attached via twist locks, but was removed, and then someone installed one using the two quick splices, well, none of it's taped and I don't trust it. Plus, the pigtail was only wired for the left/right brake/turns, the running lights were just grounded along with the ground, so not sure what the guy was thinking.

So now, I need to finish up the wiring and rear bumper, then that'll be finished. Next I want to replace the passenger wheel joint and still have to finish installing the power steering pump.

Down the road, I'd like to make a skid shield for the gas tank and possibly for the transmission and transfer case. It originally had them, as it's part of the Prospector package, but who knows what happened to them, they are known to rust out or the gas tank one has to be removed for a hitch install, which it had one once it appears. Either way, I'll keep an eye out for stock ones or try to make one.

Also, if I get the funds, I want a winch, and I'd probably make a C-channel front bumper, nothing fancy, just extend the frame rails out far enough to mount a winch, 4" c-channel fits inside of the frame perfectly, then I could use 6" c-channel for the bumper, nothing fancy, but sturdy and I could mount some shackles to the front then. It all depends if I get the money first though.

That's it for now though, if I get any snow, I'll be sure to get some pics. I also have some small projects for the interior, like finish up wiring and getting things to work, but that's a slow project since it's not too important for offroading.

I tried a manufactured hitch on trail duster before, it hung down too far also. About the same amount I think, it had to be returned. I've drug my bumper in the dirt many times. I drew up a hitch that tucks tight to the bumper,, just need to build it.

I'll be ordering my trans rebuild kit any day now for my RC.

Thanks for these pics and story! You really took me back in time... I learned to drive in a '79 RC with those short back red seats... and then the first truck that was "mine" was an '83 short bed stepside. In '85 I got a Bronco and a friend got a RC. The Bronco was nicer inside, but the Dodge would out run, pull and go places the shitty Ford would not.

The cool thing about Dodge 4x4's few realize or know is the track width is different than a Ford or GM. So it will go places the lesser trucks will get stuck.

Re: 1985 Ramcharger Royal SE Prospector Project with pics....

Well, I have really done much to it due to college and the colder weather. I did take it off road a few weeks back. I didn't get stuck, but one guy broke through some ice and took a while to get pulled out. Currently I need to reseal my transmission gasket and mount my winch. Then a few other minor things, but I'm probably going to wait until warmer weather for those items.

I'll probably mount my winch behind my stock bumper. I have C-channel and a winch mount to mount it.
