Streaming Media Boxes (Roku, Fire Stick, Chromecast)

Currently reading review after review on these things because I'm sick of the price we're being charged for cable that we don't really watch that much.

Essentially, what I'm reading is that (for example) in regards to the sticks, the Roku and FireStick are about equivalent, unless you're an Amazon Prime member, which we are. OK, great.

But everything I'm seeing seems to imply that you have to still have a cable subscription and the subscription to the channels like HBO or Showtime in order to stream the shows from those channels. This doesn't make any sense to me.

I want to buy the streaming device in order to just watch things without having a cable provider supplying me with TV signal, but in order to watch them, I have to keep the TV subscription with the provider?

Is there a list of streaming "channels" that are free versus those that you still have to pay for? (FYI, the HBO and Showtime examples are not ones that I care about)

If I can't drop my TV+internet down to just internet and still get the channels that I want, then what's the point of a streaming box/stick?

This is relevant to my interests. I too have been researching this lately.

We have a Roku but I don't use it for streaming shows, just for movies. I know if you get Hulu you can stream shows and what not but some you do have to purchase. My coworker says that he has seen some ball games on his that were pretty up to date.

I actually ended up canceling my cable and just bought a few extra Apple tvs. I watch a few series with it. I pay for hulu and Netflix. Use my buddies login for HBO. I save a good ammount of money not having cable. The only thing I don't like about Apple TV is if you search for a movie or show, even if it's free in Hulu or Netflix etc it always brings you to the App Store to try and get you to purchase it. I've heard roku is a little easier to navigate and search. I might get one next
