Re: corvette steering wheel swap R&D

ok, I am almost there. I have some pics of removing the tilt pivot bushings. I ordered a tool for $20 shipped on impulse, then stopped by a hardware store for $1.15 worth of bolts and nuts to make the tool. Using a socket as a spacer I threaded the 8-32 bolt through with a washer on top. Turning the nut pulls the bushing out. It was pretty easy. Remove the tilt spring before pulling the bushings.

After removing the bushings I pulled the top half off and installed the new upper shaft. I didn't get pics of that because my hands had grease on them.

wheel installed. I need to trim the column cover, the rim sticks out too much

Re: corvette steering wheel swap R&D

Now for the hard shit! The clock spring does not line up with the holes on the vette wheel. I had to trim some plastic from the clock spring in the lower circled portion. The wire still has yellow covering level with the clock spring. The trimming did the trick, not the horn spring is the other issue. I can't fix it until I get the other wheel puller from AutoZone.

I am posting what I am doing and any mods you make are at your own risk.

Time, lol. I do this in between work and life. Yesterday was my day off. I went grocery shopping until 2pm, came home put that crap up and pulled the ford 8.8 out in the driveway to clean up. Then cleaned up the garage to back the jimmy in and pull out the column along with the front bumper to get at the trans cooler. I'm like a rabid rabbit on my free time!

thanks for the props! Helps when you don't have kids.

Re: corvette steering wheel swap R&D

The clockspring has been trimmed around the wires, the horn plug has been trimmed also. They both fit behind the steering wheel now with no issues.

If you removed the tilt pivot bushings remember to stake them again after you install them. I used a hammer and metal chisel to put three nicks around the bushing to keep them in.

pic of the clock spring where I trimmed plastic away from the base of the wires.

The horn wires had a long plastic tube that goes through a hole on the wheel, the vettes do not have this so I had to shorten the tube enough that it would still go in the ring but not stick out too much.

soldered the horn wire to the wheel horn wire and got rid of one of the wires. I don't need two.

The column cover had to have the neck trimmed down to clear the steering wheel back cover. I used an angle grinder with a sanding disc to take it down a little at a time until it cleared.

She's ready to go. I am going to keep it out while I swap out my hydroboost pump. Need all the clearance I can get.

Awesome work!!

I always admired the steering wheel in my 04 2500HD parts truck, but it wouldn't fit my 02' 2500HD. Now I can just swap out the columns (or at least the upper shaft) and have it fit right on.

Thanks for doing the legwork!! I've had those tilt columns pulled and rebuilt before and they do eat up some time. Luckily I bought the pivot pin remover tool beforehand

looks awesome. So I dont remember which airbag set up did you go with since you had a few to try out? Or did you not end up using it?

2002 2.2l 5 speed ext cab. OBX header, ASP underdrive pulleys, Magnaflow cat and exhaust, Spectre filter, 56mm throttle body, ZQ8 Front and Rear Sway bars. Boss 4 channel amp for 2-6x9's in boxes in the back and 2- 6.5's in the doors.
Now a Mitsubishi Big 16G turbo mounted in the front.

I am going to use the 2007 express van, its a single stage unit The fit seems tight in the cover, if I feel its a lot tighter then the vette one ill try a gto unit. I know that has been done on another forum. Most expensive part is buying a vette bag unit to take it apart only to use the cover and back cover. My cost's so far

$40 for a 09 vette column, wheel and deployed airbag. (Don't think anyone will get one cheaper. I was lucky)

$70 new leather wrapped wheel

$35 1999 s10 airbag (was way to big to use)

$50 2007 express van airbag

$250 2006 corvette airbag unit. (bought off a corvette forum member)

$400 is a bit much for a wheel swap, but its unique as long as it functions as intended

$400 isn't that ridiculous - a new Momo wheel can be $200+ and the hub adapter is close to $100.

Re: corvette steering wheel swap R&D

I was testing the horn after install and found no toot. After looking at the steering wheel I see the vettes actually have a power and ground to the horn switch on the wheel where as the s10 grounds to the wheel it self. I took the ground wire on the vette wheel (its small and had a small connector) soldered it to a small washer and put the washer between the spoke cover and metal part of the wheel. Plugged it all back and hit the horn toooooooooooooot! Just so you know.

Got this today. I have been driving it for two days. I like the smaller 3 spoke wheel over the 4 spoke. When I get home tonight ill transplant my bag and igniter in to this.

Re: corvette steering wheel swap R&D

I put the two igniter bag units side by side for comparison. They are close enough. I did put two long zip zips around the unit to keep it from spreading out on insertion. The vette unit actually has a wrap around it.

Putting the unit in the cover was not bad. I used the end handle of a screw driver to push the corners in and pull the rubber over the tabs. Just took my time and it went in fine.

Airbag system went through it's checks and no airbag light BAM. "I HAVE EXORCISED THE DEMONS, THIS HOUSE IS CLEAR!"

Can we make this a sticky and is it worthy. Remember this is what I did, not you. You go F#ucking around with your SIR system and get a face full of bag, NOT MY FAULT. (Public service announcement)

Damn! You should get some leather seats or solid colored 02+ fabric seats and that wheel will not look out of place at all. Looks great either way!

The ultimate test is slamming the front bumper with a baseball bat and seeing if the airbag goes off

Just kidding: great work as usual, very easy for me to do something similiar (and I know, it would be done at own risk)

yea, I hear ya. The vette airbag was the single most expensive piece and I only used the cover. I picked up the wheel it self for about $70 new. It was listed for a pontiac solstice, but its the same as the vette.

When I figured out the tilt piece was the same I was amazed no one else figured it out. Luckily for me I was able to buy a whole c6 steering column from a guy for $40. The only part I can't stress enough is the airbag system. I can't condone what I did to anyone or be held responsible if someone else attempts it and has a problem. Just make sure if you do swap out the bag, the connectors are then same. Let me know if you have any questions.

From the truck.

I have the airbag from a c6 which I only need the cover.

I just need the airbag from a gm truck so I can change the mounting bracket and install to the c6 cover.

I dont have a part number. I searched ebay and it seems there using the gm number on the cover, so when you search by that number its giving me single and dual stage units.

2003-2007 chevy express van or 2500HD silverados. I bought mine off ebay and they can be had for around 50-60. Just preview the pics to make sure the connector is the same. I was going to solder on the right airbag connector had mine not been right. Some say thats a bigger no-no but I would have done it with out a problem. If you have more detailed questions shoot me a pm with a number and ill give you a call.

NO. there is a LOT of engineering that goes into air bag systems. there are a ton of sensors and computers incorporated into the system, and it would be very difficult to throw something together yourself.

It could be done, but it would take alot of money to do it properly. SRS systems are something you don't want to cut corners on because if you do, they will cause more harm than no airbags at all.

wear your safety belt, drive conscientiously, and use common sense and you should be fine.

But bravo for making safety a number one concern!!

Re: C6 corvette steering wheel swap with airbag

Thanks. I kinda figured there were computers involved. I only ask because I know there are lots of retard drivers out there. I've only had my lisence for 4 months and I've almost been in 3 accidents... AND my friend just got rear ended in his brand new car by a girl texting and driving ( she rear ended him doing 50, after skidding for 50 feet. he was at a complete stop)

Thanks for the help!

Well I read this all and WOW!!! I'm in but honestly not even gonna try to make the airbag work. I just one question could you wire up the steering wheel controls to work?

Not sure on this. You might be able to use the s10 clockspring with wheel controls and wire it to the switches on the vette wheel. I think it depends on if the switches are the same style. I thought about this but the wheel was in and I didnt want to spend anymore money.

One thing you may want to keep in mind when messing with airbags...the chemical (sodium azide) that makes them go boom will also kill you if inhaled or ingested. Last I heard, there is no antidote. If you have a broken or leaking container of this stuff be very careful.
