Yeah I hate when people do that at my work. 6013's aren't supposed to go in an oven. They have a water based flux, but we do and i never noticed a difference.

About 4 total with cool down then ground down. Google orb of traction it will show you an guy doing it step by step.. I know it should have taken longer so it had proper cool down time but was tired of it being apart on my bench

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

Just learning how to weld properly. I started today with some pretty thick steel. What can I do to make them better? Should I trace the pool larger so the weld doesn't look so close together?

Mike.

Haven't stopped by this site in a long time but I'll try to remember to snap a few tonight of some welds on some stainless restaurant equipment.

Here's a mig weld on 3/16" plate. It was a lap joint and this was a repair on my dad's equipment trailer jack.

Push and pause with a slight weave and thank you. I'm self taught in MIG, Stick, and TIG but I've also taken a few classes to learn about the metallurgy.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

It's the only pic I can find at the moment...
This is a test done by the CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau)

For those interested, there was an approx. 1/2" gap, I had to fill it with weld, I could make as many passes I needed yet not let the weld go 1/8" over the plate. (hope that makes sense.)
plus after they cut a 1/4 inch(or 3/8" not sure) off each end, the weld can not be below the plate as well. The weld length was 8 inches.

as you can see, no flaws. Passed 100%
I was so nervous waiting a week for the results.

Need some input on an etch thats on a 1/4" test plate i did. I've never really "read" an etch before and don't know really if I achieved optimal penetration for this size plate. What's the general rule for penetration? 20% of the metal thickness?

Done with Miller 211 on 230v at recommended settings in flat position. .035 L-56 Lincoln solid wire 75/25 gas and a beveled edge. A stringer root and a 2nd pass with an inverted V weave.

Best pic I can get right now of the weld face

We do cut and etch daily at work. in the automotive industry penetration percentages varies from customer to customer. I really dont think you are going to have to worry about that weld failing though.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

I built my tig welder, Rewired my mig welder to run dc negative on the tig torch. Flip two switches and it turns back into a mig welder. The tig lead pushes into the front of my welder and then you turn to lock. cost me 400.00 and a set of balls to tear into my new mig welder to do the conversion. yep Its a hybrid.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

Making some brackets for a york 210. And a couple other pics I took at work. Loving the TIG, havent had much time on it, out of position and around a radius I suck, love the control though. Welded a friends turbo oil feed line when he was in a pinch a few months ago, never would have turned out so good with MIG.

1/2" weld, 1 root pass and 2 covers passes, End of a boom that would hook onto a front end loader. Very hot spray arc mig at work. That will be used to hold a lot of weight.

Honda civic Crankshaft holder tool, for removing the crankshaft bolt.

Customers trailer, rusted out was very dangerous he towed it over missing over 2/3 of the tube on the front. Had to make my own tube out of 3/16" plate. Thank god for my plasma cutter.

Merry Christmas! Just made this yesterday out of a bunch of scrap.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

few pics from when i was building my bumper. all 3/16". dont remember why i stopped halfway through this weld.

15" continuous bead.

3/4" plate to 3/16. beveled and welded with a good root pass, then a final pass. should have turned the heat up a tad more.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

The last pic looks good non-the-less. I was actually surprise by the size of the material. Glad you explained it.

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

well i figured its only as strong as the metal its welded to. doesnt look like its beveled much but it is quite a bit.

it is a quite sizable chunk of steel. thickest i have ever messed with.

also full penetration from the back of the bumper. this is where i had 2 pieces corner to corner 90ļ

Re: post up some pics of your welds.

When we are welding something very heavy at work, we have to make multiple passes. A root and two covers is most common, some things however have about 10 passes, makes for a very large weld and a lot of heat. Even if you only have a 110 welder you can achieve great strength on the right joint with enough passes.
