Ive worked as a machinist for 3 or 4 years until i was offered an engineering position at work. Im not going to say i was much of a machinist, but i was really good at doing the bullshit work no one else wanted to do lol.

I recognize the block in the first pic!!!!! Not important, or on topic, but what the hay.

Procrastination has carried me this far in life, it will carry me to my grave, and hopefully put that off as well.

'98 RCSB on jack stands, waiting on me to get the 4.8 and T56 swap together, while I steal parts off of it to keep the daily going.

'99 2DR 2WD Blazer that I bought for a daily but just can't leave it alone.

Like said before me know your math. At the tech school i went to, i didnt really learn much. Of course you will learn the basics, but as soon as you get in a real shop thats when you get the education.

And don't try and memorize everything, just the basics. You memorize where to find the info, not the info.

Re: Machinists discussion

The program here has a lot of emphasis on programming. Math isn't really my strong suit, so I may have to take some remedial classes on that. I'm going for my associates of applied science degree, so Gen ed classes are a part of it.

Re: Machinists discussion

I've been machining for 6 years now, started in vocational in HS then went to college for 3 years, got into a medical job shop and made some huge improvements in the lathe department over the year and 8 months i was there. Just quit that job and started at a new company that makes leak down test equipment for various industries. I'm the head of the milling area, have always done my own programming, mostly on mastercam but have to switch to esprit for my new job. I am not sure if i am going to like it as much, especially since i've been using mastercam since i started machining. I've never really made any projects for myself but i have alot of ideas of stuff i want to make. I've made some powervalve side covers for my streetbike and some radiator mounts for my buddies prelude. I also got the chance to work in ridetech's machining area for a few months while the guy there transitioned into sales.

ANYWAY here's a few pics from my adventures of machining over the last few years

s10 cross shafts at ridetech

ridetech's machine shop

side cover for my rz ypvs

plumb bob i made back in HS

you can see the rad mounts i made in this pic

i used cermet for the first time today. i got a 10 pack of tungaloy tpmr 322 for $20 on ebay. i love ebay for indexables. anyway, cermet is fuking awesome. it cut cleaner and seemed like it required less hp, and best of all, almost no built up edge. this is compared to the C2 shit i had before in the end mill in the pics above.

it's not. aslong as you never ever ever ever try to sell it or give it away. 100% legal to have a unserialized firearm aslong as you can prove made it yourself, for yourself

good to know. i have made a few mini cannons on the lathe before though. i still need to build a mount for them and drill the fuse hole. i have yet to fire one. i have a piece of 6" round by about 10-12" 4140 i was going to make a soda can mortar with. as long as its muzzle loaded and doesnt have an open breach, i can do what i want for the most part.

I assume that is done so you can see your scribe lines better? My grandfather just always scribes the surface without it, although I am sure that at 76 it would help him see better..........

yes and normally so do i. but i wanted to be able to just see it instead of having to look at it at the right angle, and i didnt want to have to scribe deep into the aluminum. it took 30 min. to make 1 cut across that block!

Geez.........is your bandsaw set up to start it and do other stuff while its cutting, or do you have to stand there and stare at it?

Procrastination has carried me this far in life, it will carry me to my grave, and hopefully put that off as well.

Re: Machinists discussion

oh hell no lol. I dropped my springs out, answered a few emails, made some lunch. its a cheap harbor freight dry saw, and for some reason it doesn't like aluminum. i need to buy some quality blades.the saws at work would have had that done in a few minutes.

not bad! did you mill the bracket from a piece of angle iron?

heres some pretty chips from work yesterday. i love chips. enlarging a 3/4" hole to 1.5" with a 2 flute end mill in some 3/16" steel plates. its funny how the plate bends under the stress and pops out "dome" shaped washed

Sweet, now I have to remember to get measurements for the transmission spacer. I know its a bit off topic, but you got these done, right about the time I decided to start on a SFBD frame for the same truck......I think sometimes I am as bad as a woman.

it's a sharp, has prototrax aswell as a power knee and variable frequency speed.. it's basically about as badass as you can get and not have a full on cnc conversion.
