picked up replacement engine and trans for the 92

my son and I ran out to get a replacement engine from an older fella Saturday. I thought he had said it was a 4.3, but its a 3.8. his el camino came stock with that smaller v6 and he said he finally swapped to a 350. this little engine looks like he took care of. the heads were recently redone (within that last two years) and the block is very clean with new freeze plugs. he said it s an excellent engine and ran great and if I had called him a few days earlier, I could have driven the car with the engine in it.

oh well, it should work to get my youngest son back and forth to school and visiting his grand parent's house up in the hill country.

we also went to pick and pull and got a trans from a 92 single cab pick up with a 4.3 in it. a very clean 700r4 and we almost also pulled one from a 92 astro van that was super clean too. that should hold us as we go through my son learning to do the trans/engine swap and then later a fuel injection install and then a v8 swap. we are going to do this in steps so he can see the differences in working on a carb's engine and performance versus a fuel injected engine, and finally versus a fuel injected v8.

he is super excited about it

I don't believe a 3.8 will bolt up to a 4.3 trans. Think the bolt pattern is different.

I thought that too but the el camino 3.8 is different than the Camaro 3.8. its all bolted up and ready to drop into the truck once we pull the 2.8 and 5 speed out. I guess its an odd ball engine that was only done for 3 years or something like that. its a low hp engine which is why el camino owners were swapping them out, I bet.

Thanks for clearing that up.
I guess I forgot about the Chevy 3.8 because back then it was called the 229 V6.
2cc less displacement than the Venerable Buick 3800 (231).
Only used in Chevys for a few years.

Yep, they had an odd fire motor and an even fire motor. My brother in law had a 78 Malibu wagon with one of those. His kids could blow up the transmission left and right, but the motor lived!!!
