92 Sonoma 2.8L 5 speed

Hey guys, just was wondering if anyone knew why when I get up to bout 70mph in 4th, then shift to 5th my truck loses speed. It will only stay around the 55mph to 65mph (it will only hit 65mph if I have a tail wind or its completely calm out). It also drops significantly when going uphill, as in I pretty much have to drop down to 3rd gear to even get enough power. Well if anyone knows what it is or the solution it would be a big help.

How many miles on the truck?
Have you done a tune up lately?
Take a look at the fuel injectors at idle to see if you are getting a nice even spray.

Re: 92 Sonoma 2.8L 5 speed

Sounds like your in the very early stages of fuel starvation from a highly restrictive fuel filter or the fuel pump is losing the needed fuel pressure.

If and when you change the fuel pump, get the fuel pump and sender assembly as a unit. DO NOT buy an aftermarket fuel pump. They have very poor reliability and cheap quality controls.

Only buy an AC-Delco fuel pump assembly and when that change occurs, change the fuel filter.

Another area is clean the black ground wire leading off the fuel pump assembly to the frame and clean that also. Apply grease over that connection when reattached.
