P0449 EVAP circuit malfunction

I'm having a problem with my 2001 S10 4.3 giving the OBDII code P0449, apparently an EVAP control circuit malfunction. I've been chasing this issue for a while now, and have already replaced the gas cap and vent solenoid with new equipment. The truck has a lot of miles on it, and I think the previous owner monkeyed with the wiring a bit. There are a few noticeable splices that were used to power a Tekonsha trailer brake system. But I don't see any obvious fraying in the other wires. I've begun taking the plastic sheathing off the harness to inspect each wire one by one. A very time consuming process that I can only assume would cost a fortune at a shop.

If anyone knows the color wire used for the EVAP system on a 2001 S10 LS 4.3, it would really help me out. Or where exactly it would connect to in the fusebox. I don't even see an EVAP fuse to check.

Re: P0449 EVAP circuit malfunction

After some research, I've determined that EVAP runs off the Eng1 fuse and is a pink wire with a white wire going to the PCM. My next course of action will be to check that fuse, then clean or maybe replace the pigtail to the EVAP solenoid under the truck.

Is it possible for a mod to move this thread to the electrical subforum? Because I didn't know it existed, and it seems like a better place for this question as the problem is electrical in nature.

Re: P0449 EVAP circuit malfunction

Actually never mind. I fixed it. It was a bad connector pigtail on the solenoid. I got a used pigtail from the junkyard and spliced it in, now the EVAP system works perfectly. No more P0449, and it can finally pass emissions.

It turns out that many times when these things crap out, it's because of tiny breaks in the wires on the pigtail. The lines look intact, but inside the insulation they are actually broken. I made sure to grab a couple of spares while I was at the yard.

Yeah, I'm stoked about that. The yard didn't even charge me for the pigtail. Of course I had also previously put on a new solenoid. I've been chasing this problem since day one of owning the truck. The guy who sold it to me clearly cheated it to pass the emissions test. Check engine light popped on as I was driving it home. Total ripoff, but it's been fun replacing nearly everything on it.

Luckily I've only had the check engine light come on in 12 years of ownership, and that was a bad vacuum switch on the A.I.R. Pump.
