Exhaust recommendations

Looking for some recommendations from the 2.8/3.4 guys with headers.

I just got the hedman street (not long) style headers in. I've got the 2.8 pretty much bone stock except for a weber and the headers now. I'm thinking 2.5" from the headers to a Y pipe, then into a muffler with dual out. 2.5" all the way if I can.

Anyone use smaller or larger diameter pipes and for what reasons?

I have tried several different types of exhaust systems. I ran 2" duals with packs in my '82 2.8. Didn't make a lot of improvement, but it was definitely LOUD.
The Redneck truck had Headmans with 2 1/2" off of each side, going into a Flowmaster Y - it went out to 3". I ran a 3" high flow cat and into a Summit Racing 3" system. The system bolted on in the stock configuration and looks stock except for the sewer pipe size...
The Headmans rotted out after 13 years, so I went with stainless Ebay headers. The outlets are 2 1/4"and run into a Y with a 2 1/2" outlet. I plumbed this into the 3" cat and exhaust. It feels like it has a little more low end torque with the smaller headers and Y pipe. I think I may have gone a little overkill with the huge stuff...
The Summit muff also rotted out, so I installed a Flowmaster 3" stainless muff. It is LOUD!! V6s have harsh exhaust harmonics.

So, I think that duals are sort of a waste of money since this a small displacement engine, and unless you have to have the dual 'look', a 2 1/2" single system is probably more than adequate for a weezer 2.8...

Thanks for the advice max!

The headers I have are these:
Except no ceramic coating. So its a 2.5" collector.

I think I'm leaning towards 2.25" from the headers to a 2.5" Y pipe outlet. Then just 2.5" the rest of the way. I've heard these motors "like" some back-pressure. I'll see what the price difference is between running just the single out, or getting a dual out muffler. Just as you said, the dual out is really just for looks.
