Did I ruin my truck?

My roommate just bought a 2.5 and we set the timing yesterday by first jumping the upper right two pins in his service connector. I decided to do the same to my 2.8 since I've been running a little rich since I bought the truck. Put the paperclip in, and now the truck won't start.
Is the procedure the same with my 2.8 or did I screw something up with that pin? I can get it to run but barely. Thanks in advance for the help this is my first chevy.

I'm guessing it's the '91 in his other thread.

Sorry, yes a 91. Battery is good, fuses are good. I drove it 10 minutes before sti king that paperclip in and that's all that changed before the no-start.

Have you checked every fuse?

Every fuse under the dash is good and I have new plugs and wires.

I can get it to start now and it runs smooth with my foot on the throttle, but if I rev it it back fires like too much fuel, and it idles so low it basically dies.

I'm about to check spark right now and regap the plugs.

Re: Did I ruin my truck?

That's not how you set the timing on a 2.8, and pretty sure it's not correct for the 2.5 either.

there's a connector above the passenger foot well that you disconnect to set timing.

Grounding the ALDL connector in the same way you would check codes won't cause it not to run though.

I wonder why I read that yesterday.

So I guess this is just a crazy coincidence that I'm having this issue. It's running like my timing is way off but I've been trying to set it for an hour with no luck.

Make sure your using the correct timing mark on the balancer. Theres 2 thin lines and 1 fat line. Its the fat line you use. Engine should be at operating temp. And make sure you have the 1 cavity connector unpligged in the passenger side footwell. Also hopefully your reading the timing gun correctly if it has a dial.
Also how deep did you short out the 2 pons on the aldl? Hopefully you didnt booger up the terminals by sticking in the clips to far and rough

Yeah I set the timing correctly yesterday morning, it wasn't until later that i messed it up.

I just swapped out the IAC and it fired right up but was idling very very high.

I'm going to clean out the throttle body port where the IAC sits and see if that brings the idle down to a point where I can set the timing.
Thanks.

Update:
I got it running and driving back to normal but the timing mark is at the 5 o'clock not 1 o'clock. I'll just leave it as is until I do some more research. Thanks for the help.

Re: Did I ruin my truck?

Does your truck require the wire disconnect on the passenger side in the cab?

Thanks.
Also make sure your minimum air is correctly set. Has the idle set screw been messed with? Have you changed the tps at all?

Re: Did I ruin my truck?

Does your throttle shaft have any play in it? Is your minimum air set correctly? Tps set correctly? Truck wont ever idle or run right if these things arent correct
