Help? Anyone in the Pittsburgh Area

Anyone in the Pittsburgh area done cab corners before? I don't know how to weld but I got a buddies welder and had/have someone helping but we are stumped how to get these SOBs in there. I also got some smaller shit I wanna do like shave my tailgate handle and weld some shock re-locaters in. I'm trying to get this sucker driveable by Halloween. Thanks

Re: Help? Anyone in the Pittsburgh Area

well i guess you saw the shock relocating thread..

but why ya having so much trouble with the cab corners? Did ya pull the bed off? It makes it 100X easier and is worth the hassle.

I just first lay the the new cab corner in place over the existing sheetmetal, then with a sharpy marker draw the outline of how much the filler covers on the truck. Pull the filler back off and start cutting out the bad metal of the cab until you get to good solid area all the way around making sure you dont go outside those first drawn lines. can now cut the cab corner down to a smaller size if desired now closer to the needed size. Lastly remark the cab again with sharpy marker and then cut it on those lines. The new filler should fit in place of the stock metal nicely at this point. Tack, tack tack tack tack... until the thing is welded solid.

just a hint though... try to stay away from any sharp body lines when ya cut for the filler piece... makes it much easier to mud smooth later on if your sanding slightly curved or flat areas. Ohh and use little magnets to hold the piece in there and flat with the stock metal, since ya cant get a clamp behind there to hold it.

haha

I do have the bed off, really had to because the rust was so bad. We first attempted the passenger side and I think we cut out too much. Our mantra was with all this extra metal why not replace as much as possible. So now we are as far as into the inside rocker/door jam seam . Then I think somewhere in the land of "does this look right?" we may have cut the new corner a hair on the small side. I pretty much have had a low involvement with the process since I lack the knowledge of welding. I have had problems getting my friend to come by lately so I am kinda stuck.

Re: Help? Anyone in the Pittsburgh Area

here is the one corner.. The passenger side I am guessing we (my friend) cut out too much, i think its savable but i might buy another corner just in case. The driver side i can put my finger in the side and come out behind the cab!
