um... muffler exploded lmao

well i was driving down the road at a constant 35 or so, just passing one of the few "thug" infested gas stations here when i heard a hell of an explosion and my damn truck moved...! honestly it sounded like a shotgun so i down shifted and hauled ass lmao. i stopped at a drive through a few blocks down and got out to check then i noticed my exuast was considerably louder, then a car full of ppl that were pulling out of the gas station i was passing got to the red light right by me and proceded to tell me that something underneth exploded, so i looked and seen this!

now i suspect that running rich will cause something to this effect over a long term but i'm not rich, no black smoke or smoke of any kind, other then if i forget and pump it to start after it already warmed up then i get a very small puff of black then nothing. so wtf? i'm running no cat, pipe in the place and just what was the muff then out the drivers side behind the tire. any ideas?

oh and btw its a '86 yota truck 2.4l 2bbl

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

I had a muffler do that on my '73 El Camino, 350 v8 2bbl. It ended up being the coil pack. I replaced the coil pack and plug wires. Then it was good to go. So check your coil pack.

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

the truck wants a new shiny muffler

it could be alot of things, the one thing i can think of is too much pressure in there would baloon it and explode, but who knows, could be lots of things to cause it, first thing i picture, is gas inside the muffler that ignited and decided it wanted to blow the muffler up, who knows

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

i had both my mufflers split open on my 76 scout.like if you cut down the middle with a dull butter knife.they did it at differant times also.it has true duals so i think it is just a case of bad muffler bearings and low turn signal fluid.or worst case a bad headlight cooler , either way the end result is not good.

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

if you tap your brake three times fast... you'll usually blow up the muffler. But other than that the headlight fluid could be the other cause of this tragedy.

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

Been there, Done that! nothin new, When I was a kid driving Mom, & Dad's car, my friends, and I used to get our car's up to highway speeds in gear, then turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on, and "Boom" we'd always get a nice backfire! Sometimes the muffler used to blow out, or partly blow out, leaving us with a loud, or louder car, and we loved it,,, Mom, & Dad, weren't too happy, nor could they figure out why their car went thru so many mufflers?

Yes, I'd agree any momentary break in the ignition circuit as the vehicle is under power can do this, but also raw gas leaking into the hot exhaust from a bad carb, or injector, can cause this also.

All you have to do is get some skyhooks to hold up the muffler, then apply the bucket of spotwelds with your left handed wrench and then seal with some checkered paint and you wil be good to go.

Re: um... muffler exploded lmao

sounds to me like your rotator splint came off and took out your muff. bearing out at the same time....lol

whats really fun is when you have an old truck that needs carb work and having the ignition shut down for an instant and have it back fire like that but with a really rotten down pipe on the exhaust.
friend had this happen and it puffed out the muffler and blew the exhaust off basically right behind the manifold. was loud as hell when it did it and loud as hell all the way home too..lol
