Question Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

hey guys
I havent really seen hedders on these motors but are you able to fully torque all the bolts? and I had really bad luck with hedman on a previous vehicle, do they constantly need to be tightened and checked? it seemed like on that vehicle every 2 weeks I had to tighten the flange bolts and collector bolts

and for my second question, I see a few of the hedders offer a 2.5" collector, whats the size of our stock attachments? with the motor out of the vehicle is it easy to weld on a new collector piece (just kinda go a little down the y-pipe or something) or is it a "fixed" piece and if I was off by 1/8" id be screwed?

and I guess I might as well check to save some time, with the motor out of the vehicle, has anyone ever sucessfully bolted hedders up and reinstalled the motor? or is it easier to install after its in?

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

On mine with JBA's I torque them every 6 months.
I used 3/8 x 1 -3/8 head header bolts with exhaust
lock washers. Using the smaller head bolts allow me
to get in there with a socket. You could also go with
allen head bolts which would make it a lil easier. >

When I firdt installed them, I retorqued them as soon as
they cooled down 5 or 6 times until they seated. I used
Mr.Gasket Ultra Seal exhaust manifold gaskets and made
sure to apply a good bead of Permetex red hi temp sealer
on both sides of the gasket at the bolt holes and ports.

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

did you use the supplied gasket? is there even a gasket for the collector? ill probly go the bolt and lock washer route over allen head bolts
and any advise on the collector size? just leave it stock? I mean I do have a 2.25" y-pipe however for some retarded reaosn they didnt go the full way up...so I have like an inch of stock pipe...any way I could swap that to 2.25 but still have it bolt up to a "stock collector" hedder

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

^ That I do not know. The stock manifolds are suppose to
be good flowers up to 300 hp, from what I've read. The
larger 2.25 y-pipe is a sweet deal. If you go short tubes
hooked up to the 2.25 pipe out to a good 2.50 cat then
2.50 out the back with a good free flowing muff, you'd
be about as right as it gets.. As far as Long Tubes, you
might ask Jess just how much fun HE had getting them hooked
up..

Deal is if you don't have any or just slight eng mods
like a CAI, etc, headers won't really do ya. Now if you
a cam, heads flowed and custom flash for the PCM,
well that's whole different enchilada .

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

well I have like stock pipe for about 2 inches from the manifolds then it turns into the 2.25" y-pipe, which goes into a 2.5" exhaust.
WHEN installing the hedders, ill also be doing the entire motor, pistons, cam, head work etc...so in theory the hedders would pay off. I just wanna find a way to turn my y-pipe into a true 2.25", and fix that 2 inches the exhaust shop didnt switch

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

Once you get that 2" deal handled, that lil motor should
do a lil screaming..I hope you'll also consider a custom
reflash. I believe you're gonna need it to see the
full potential with your mods = a lot of had earned
dough spent.

Anh if you're going that route, you might spring
for ARP header bolts instead of what I liked to.

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

any advice on how to fix that that little issue? is there a part available somewhere to just swap the collector attachment? what is the stock size on that anyways?
and I was thinking of having it custom tuned, maybe even dyno tuned afterwards

Re: Torquing your hedder bolts and collector question

well I guess what im getting at is...will having that tiny bit of stock pipe at the top of my y-pipe (where the manifolds connects and like 2 inches down) effect anything? or should I do some serious research into how to replace that bit of piping?
